About The Position

This position is for a Registered Nurse (RN) in the Medical-Surgical (MedSurg) unit at a 492-bed facility. The facility is a Level I Trauma Center, Level III NICU, and a Primary Stroke Center. The role requires a minimum of 18 months of experience in MedSurg and/or ICU. Experience with EPIC or Cerner is mandatory, with Cerner being required for those with strictly ICU experience. Staff must be away for 6 months before returning as a traveler. The unit information details specific patient types and required skills for various units including 6 North Trauma Surgical, 5 South Neuroscience, 5 North MedSurg/Oncology, 3 South Orthopedic, and 3 North MS/Ortho/Urology. Telemetry monitoring is conducted by tele techs, and RNs are required to interpret and confirm telemetry strip readings every 4 hours. Support staff includes CNAs, a Receptionist/HUC, Phlebotomy, IV/VAT Team, Hospitalist support, and Telemetry Monitoring Techs. The technology and equipment used include Cerner EMR (EPIC experience considered), Plum 360 IV Pumps, Omnicell for medication dispensing, and Spacelabs monitors. Orientation for first-time travelers or those returning after more than a year includes 24 hours of classroom time and 24 hours on the unit. Rehire orientation duration will vary.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 18 months of experience in MedSurg and/or ICU.

Responsibilities

  • Interpret and confirm telemetry strip readings every 4 hours.
  • Provide care for General Surgery and Vascular surgeries patients.
  • Provide care for CVA, TBI, Seizures, AMS, Spinal Fusion, Craniotomy, Degenerative Diseases, post-trauma, and angiogram patients.
  • Provide care for patients with all patient types except stroke and MI, including palliative care, ETOH withdrawal, MS/Oncology patients.
  • Provide care for Orthopedic and spine surgeries patients including joint replacements, fractures, fusions, and laminectomies.
  • Provide care for Urology, ENT, ortho, and MedSurg patients.
  • Perform wound care.
  • Manage chest tubes.
  • Administer medications and document care.
  • Handle escalations.
  • Perform IV starts.
  • Perform blood draws from central lines.
  • Perform trach care.
  • Manage PEG tubes.
  • Manage NGT.
  • Perform ostomy care.
  • Manage surgical site care.
  • Manage C-Collar.
  • Apply abdominal binders.
  • Administer restraints.
  • Administer chemotherapy (if certified).
  • Manage drains.
  • Manage foleys.
  • Manage negative pressure dressings.
  • Perform dressing changes.
  • Manage wound vacs.
  • Perform CVL dressing changes.
  • Follow nurse-driven foley protocols.
