About The Position

Under general supervision, the Registered Nurse I (New Graduate) assists at the advanced beginner level in providing individualized, goal directed nursing care to patients and families utilizing principles and practices of the nursing process; interacts with other members of the health care team to achieve desired outcomes. This posting is for opportunities on the Main Hospital Neuroscience and Acute Care Units, specifically 8W Neuro Acute Care, 9W Neurology/Neuroscience, and 9E Neuroscience Intermediate Care. These units care for adult and geriatric patients with a variety of neurological conditions including neurosurgical patients (spine surgery, brain tumor resections, surgical stroke patients), general neurology patients (Parkinson's, multiple sclerosis, neuromuscular diseases), and stroke patients. Nurses on these units manage arterial lines, external ventricular drains measuring ICPs, lumbar drains, and titration of high alert drips. Nurses receive NIHS, ACLS, and EKG certification during orientation, and Stroke Certification is a unit Magnet goal. Staffing ratios are 1:3 or 1:4 based on acuity. The units are described as fast-paced, highly functioning, and engaged teams.

Requirements

  • Licensure as a registered nurse by the South Carolina Board of Nursing or a compact state.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) required, either a certification from an American Heart Association (AHA) BLS for Healthcare Providers (or AHA recognized equivalent) or an American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider.
  • Ability to perform job functions while standing (Continuous).

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor of Nursing degree preferred.
  • RN staff hired on or after July 1, 2013 with an Associate or Diploma degree in nursing are required to be enrolled in an accredited BSN program within two years and successfully obtain a BSN degree within four years of the RN hire or reclassification date.
  • Nurses are supported and encouraged to obtain a certification when eligible (on 8W Neuro Acute Care).
  • Nurses receive NIHS, ACLS, and EKG certification during orientation and Stroke Certification is a unit Magnet goal (on 9E Neuroscience Intermediate Care).

Responsibilities

  • Assists at the advanced beginner level in providing individualized, goal directed nursing care to patients and families utilizing principles and practices of the nursing process.
  • Interacts with other members of the health care team to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Manages arterial lines, external ventricular drains measuring ICPs, lumbar drains, and titration of high alert drips (on 9E Neuroscience Intermediate Care).
  • Cares for a variety of adult Neuroscience Acute Care patients, including those with neurosurgical conditions and general neurology/medical/surgical patients.
  • Supports Comprehensive Spine Center and Comprehensive Epilepsy Center programs.
  • Cares for overflow of Parkinson's, multiple sclerosis, and neuromuscular diseases.
  • Cares for Medical Stroke patients and general neurology patients.
  • Cares for overflow of neurosurgical patients and spine surgeries.
