The Registered Nurse Float PIV practices independently in critical care and similar clinical settings, providing routine and complex care in accordance with patient treatment plans. The nurse demonstrates awareness of relevant clinical circumstances, continues to develop the ability to manage clinical contingencies, and makes appropriate assignments and delegates care to other providers. The role requires flexibility across the ministry, regular communication of assignment availability, and the ability to work on more than one unit. Consistent with the ANA Scope and Standards of Practice, the nurse uses the nursing process to assess, diagnose, plan, intervene, and evaluate care for assigned patients. The role includes addressing increasingly complex psychological, emotional, cultural, and social needs; administering medications and treatments according to protocol; monitoring treatment effectiveness and side effects; documenting patient histories, symptoms, medications, and care; and assessing learning needs and educating patients, families, and caregivers. The position also supports patient throughput and unit operations, promotes safe and evidence-based care, communicates effectively across the continuum of care, and complies with applicable healthcare laws and regulations. Unit-specific competencies depend on the designated unit’s patient population.
