About The Position

The Elon University School of Law Library, located in Greensboro, NC, aims to meet the educational and research needs of its community, including students, staff, faculty, and adjuncts. It also serves as a resource for alumni, practicing attorneys, and the general public. This position is part of a seven-person law library staff and focuses on supervising the Access Services department and providing reference and legal research instruction. Key duties include planning and directing Access Services activities such as library hours, circulation, course reserves, inter-library loans, and stack maintenance. The role involves managing a full-time staff member and student workers, determining service schedules, and collecting statistics. Additionally, the librarian will manage social media, serve on the Student Engagement Committee, and co-teach in the library instructional program, developing instructional materials and serving as faculty liaisons.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Library/Information Science and Juris Doctor law degree are required.
  • Combinations of education and work experience will be considered.
  • All applicants must have a JD degree.
  • JD holders without an MLIS will be considered if a candidate has library experience or qualifications.

  • Some flexibility in scheduling may be needed 2 to 4 weeks during the academic year.

  • As this role oversees the opening and closing of the law library, hours may sometimes vary to maintain staff coverage during hours of operation.

  • Teaching first year Basic Legal Research in Charlotte on a rotating basis may be required (the course is taught over ten (10) weeks in the fall terms).
  • Collaborating with other reference librarians and the library director to create and update legal research instructional materials, with a particular focus on Artificial Intelligence developments.
  • Providing informal instruction to students, faculty, student groups, or other populations as needed.
  • Working with our Charlotte Flex part-time program and full-time program to provide reference and legal research instruction.
  • Attending at least three (3) professional development sessions per year.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises the Access Services department, including planning, organizing, and directing activities such as opening/closing the library, setting library hours, circulation of materials, managing course reserves, overseeing inter-library loans, and stack maintenance.
  • Manages a full-time staff member (Circulation Paraprofessional) and hires, supervises, trains, and schedules student workers.
  • Determines circulation and reference schedules, assigning desk shifts (in-person and virtual) and maintaining shift calendars.
  • Collects and maintains statistics for both Access Services and Reference points.
  • Manages all social media accounts for the library.
  • Serves on the library's Student Engagement Committee to support student experience initiatives.
  • Co-teaches (and occasionally individually teaches) in the library instructional program, developing and updating instructional materials.
  • Serves as reference liaisons to faculty.
  • Provides general reference and research assistance to Elon Law students and faculty.
  • Staffs reference desk services and virtual/chat reference shifts.
  • Creates and updates legal reference materials (e.g., instructional infographics, LibGuides).
  • Attends regular reference meetings and collaborates on reference projects.
  • Updates reference documentation, including the reference manual and other processes.
  • Creates passwords for public computer use and troubleshoots technology issues with computer systems.
  • Provides limited reference guidance to public patrons.
  • Participates in the library faculty liaison program, acting as the primary contact for assigned law school faculty and adjuncts.
  • Provides in-depth research assistance to faculty members and trains faculty Research Assistants.
  • Creates subject matter bibliographies and LibGuides to supplement faculty courses.
  • Provides credentials and instruction for library database usage.
  • Participates in assigned and voluntary library committees, including the Collections & Acquisitions Committee and the Student Engagement Committee.
  • Contributes to policy management and development in collaboration with other library staff, including drafting and updating library policy documents.
