About The Position

Midwest Center for Youth and Families, a subsidiary of UHS, is seeking a caring and compassionate Recreation Therapist. The center is a fully accredited, 74-bed private residential treatment facility with locations in Valparaiso and Kouts, Indiana. It provides behavioral healthcare through a full-immersion Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) program for children and adolescents ages 10–18 who face emotional, behavioral, and mental health challenges. The Patriot Support Program provides specialized treatment for children of active-duty military, reserve, and National Guard members. The Recreation Therapist assesses patients’ conditions and develops and implements individualized recreational goals. The role provides and coordinates therapeutic recreation programming and manages cases in conjunction with the DBT programming model. Available hours are Monday through Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., with rotating Saturday and Sunday work.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Therapeutic Recreation or degree equivalency from an accredited college or university.
At least two years of related work experience.
Licensed or Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist credential required.
Must be at least 21 years old.

Nice To Haves

Knowledge of mental health diagnoses is preferred.

Responsibilities

Assess patients’ conditions and formulate and implement individualized recreational goals.
Provide activities that meet patients’ individual needs and follow the program group schedule.
Plan, organize, and implement outings.
Complete a skills assessment to evaluate each patient’s level of functioning within 10 days of admission.
Document patient groups provided.
Provide and coordinate therapeutic recreation programming and manage cases in conjunction with the DBT programming model.
