About The Position

The City of Lake Elsinore partners with the Lake Elsinore Unified School District to assist with after-school programs. This recruitment is for multiple temporary positions lasting through the end of the 26/27 school year (June 2027). The Recreation Specialist is responsible for supervising their respective area, staff, and patrons. This role involves opening and closing the work location, enforcing site and program rules, developing, implementing, and evaluating programs. The employee will oversee program equipment, process attendance, create and maintain records, and train staff. Additionally, the position assists in overall program maintenance, identifies safety hazards, and administers first aid as needed. The Recreation Specialist acts as lead support staff in promoting, organizing, and leading a variety of recreation activities, specifically for the EXCEL After School Program, with work locations at Lake Elsinore Unified School District Elementary Schools.

Requirements

  • Equivalent of a high school diploma.
  • Experience leading activities for children or teens.
  • Possession of a valid Class C California driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to take an active role in providing leadership and discipline to all ages.
  • Ability to be creative and innovative with recreation programs dealing with children and teens.
  • Ability to provide information and communicate in a clear and efficient manner.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with co-workers, supervisors, volunteers, patrons, public and private agencies, general public and special groups.
  • Ability to maintain attendance records, prepare reports, activity calendars, maintain registration records, provide customer service.
  • Ability to take direction from supervisors and implement directives successfully.
  • Skill to operate an office computer and a variety of word processing, spreadsheet and software applications.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience is preferred but not required.
  • CPR/AED and First Aid training is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Supervising respective area, staff, and patrons.
  • Opening and closing the work location.
  • Enforcing site and program rules.
  • Developing, implementing, and evaluating programs.

  • Training fellow staff.
  • Assisting in overall program maintenance.
  • Identifying safety hazards.
  • Administering first aid as needed.
  • Working directly with Elementary aged students implementing physical fitness education and S.T.E.A.M. programming.
  • Overseeing daily facility activities.
  • Developing and implementing promotional strategies.
  • Assisting in the creation of fliers, press releases, calendars, and other such documents.
  • Assessing programs and events to ensure they meet the needs/wants of the EXCEL program.
  • Assisting with the management of equipment and supplies.
  • Processing and handling money for activity registration, memberships, admission fees, refunds, and concession sales.
  • Registering participants for events.
  • Supervising and training volunteers and other staff in facility operations and functions.
  • Modifying staff schedule as needed.
  • Assisting in the overall maintenance of the facility and surrounding areas by coordinating and reporting maintenance issues.
  • Answering phones and maintaining orderly office space.
  • Inspecting the facility and equipment to identify safety hazards.
  • Preparing, implementing, breaking down, and assessing special events.
  • Documenting any incidents or injuries that occur.
  • Identifying inappropriate behavior or activity and taking corrective action.
  • Determining if medical assistance is necessary and ensuring medical professionals are contacted in a timely manner.
  • Providing necessary information for supervisor and site staff.
  • Completing monthly reports.
  • Providing monthly facility attendance reports to the Community Services Department office.
  • Establishing positive working relationships with representatives of community organizations, state/local agencies and associations, City management and staff, and the public.
  • Completing other similar duties as assigned.
