About The Position

HeartShare St. Vincent’s Services (HSVS) Nuevo Camino program is dedicated to providing 38 unaccompanied minors, ages 5-12, with a supportive, nurturing environment through transitional foster homes, daily education Monday - Friday, and supportive wrap-around services in the East Brooklyn section of New York City. Our program is rooted in ensuring that service delivery is trauma informed, culturally appropriate, and tailored to the needs of each child while maintaining all program requirements of ORR. The Recreation Specialist is responsible for planning and organizing engaging daily activities for the minors. Recreation specialists develop, implement, and provide recreational programs for all participants with the Nuevo Camino program to promote self-development and expression, pro-social behavior and habits, knowledge, and skills that promote long-term healthy living.

Requirements

  • Bilingual in Spanish required.
  • Highschool or GED Equivalent required
  • Experience working with children and/or diverse communities required
  • Knowledge of multicultural issues including race, ethnicity, class, religion, sexual orientation, and gender expression
  • Strong organizational skills with meticulous attention to detail
  • Ability to prioritize responsibilities, manage shifting priorities independently, and respond appropriately in a fast-paced environment
  • Commitment to the mission and values of ORR Unaccompanied Minors programs and ability to model those values in relationships with colleagues and partners

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree from four year college or equivalent​ preferred
  • Experience in recreation, youth development, education, social services, or related fields preferred

Responsibilities

  • Plan and lead daily recreational and enrichment activities for youth ages 5–12
  • Develop age-appropriate programming that promotes creativity, teamwork, self-development, and healthy living
  • Foster a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment for all participants
  • Support children’s emotional and social development through structured group activities
  • Collaborate with program staff to ensure activities align with trauma-informed and culturally responsive practices
  • Maintain accurate records and ensure compliance with ORR program standards
  • Adapt programming to meet the varying developmental and emotional needs of participants
