About The Position

This position is responsible for the direct supervision of children and residents participating in the recreational program at the Renee Steedley Family Residence in Bronx, NY. The role involves motivating client participation, monitoring activities for compliance, and assisting with the implementation of scheduled recreational activities, including holiday events. A significant part of the role includes maintaining various records, de-escalating conflicts, and managing recreational equipment. Additionally, the Assistant Recreation Specialist will assist with the After School Program, developing and maintaining a structured program that includes study time, lunch, and socialization. A key component of this role also involves kitchen duties, including preparing nutritious meals according to USDA guidelines, following recipes, and ensuring food safety and sanitation.

Requirements

  • Two years (2) of College and one year (1) of related experience OR High School Diploma and two years (2) of related experience.
  • Knowledgeable of recreational activities in the community.
  • Experience working with children of ALL ages.
  • Bilingual in Spanish, highly preferred.
  • Food Safety Certification, required within 6 months of employment.
  • Excellent communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Direct supervision of children and residents in the recreational program.
  • Motivate client participation in the recreation program.
  • Monitor recreational activities to ensure compliance with established regulations.
  • Submit monthly assessments for program effectiveness.
  • Assist with the implementation of scheduled recreational activities.
  • Organize and implement all holiday activities for residents.
  • Maintain all records in accordance with program policies and regulated agencies (attendance forms, permission slips, monthly schedules and reports, trip forms, lesson forms, etc.).
  • De-escalate conflicts among the client population through non-violent intervention, using security guards as backup.
  • Instruct and demonstrate basic rules and finer points of various sports to groups and individuals.
  • Issue, collect, and account for recreation equipment.
  • Inventory and maintain all recreational equipment and supplies for quarterly submission.
  • Plan all activities within the confines of the recreational budget.
  • Complete monthly recreation schedules.
  • Assist with supervising and monitoring of all participants in the After School Program.
  • Develop and maintain a structured After School Program consisting of a Study Hour, lunch period, and a structured socialization period.
  • Prepare nutritious breakfast, lunch & snacks in accordance to USDA guidelines.
  • Follow recipes, menu, and portion controls.
  • Ensure that food is prepared in a sanitary and timely manner.
  • Clean, sanitize, and organize food products and utensils in the kitchen on a routine basis (e.g., refrigerator, freezer, shelves, dishes).
