About The Position

The Part-Time Recreation Specialist supports the planning, coordination, and delivery of recreational programs, community events, and public engagement initiatives for the City of League City. The position provides front-line interaction with residents, supports logistics and operational needs, and assists staff in ensuring safe, inclusive, and high-quality recreational experiences. This role includes two service divisions, Special Events and Adaptive Recreation, each requiring specialized skills to meet community needs. The Special Events Recreation Specialist focuses on supporting City-wide festivals, holiday celebrations, pop-up events, recreational tournaments, and community engagement programs. The Adaptive Recreation Specialist focuses on programs designed for individuals with disabilities or differing abilities, requiring assistance with inclusive programming, activity modifications, participant support, and fostering an environment of respect, empowerment, and equal participation. This role is subject to random drug screening under the City's safety-sensitive positions policy.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be able to work evenings and weekends.
  • Three plus years of recreation/ programming experience.
  • For Adaptive Recreation: ability to work respectfully with individuals with disabilities and willingness to learn adaptive program techniques.
  • Knowledge of recreation programming principles and positive customer service techniques.
  • Skill in communicating effectively with diverse groups of participants, parents, vendors, and staff.
  • Ability to follow safety rules, adapt to changing program needs, and problem-solve in real time.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team and independently when required.
  • Ability to lift, move, and transport recreational equipment (typically up to 30–40 lbs.).
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and stand or walk for extended periods.
  • For Adaptive Recreation: ability to learn and apply activity modifications and inclusive practices.
  • This position requires the ability to stand, walk, bend, lift, carry, push, and pull objects; operate small equipment; verbally communicate with participants and staff; observe program areas for safety; and maintain attention in active, dynamic environments.
  • Mental functions include the ability to concentrate, make decisions, exercise judgment, follow instructions, and interact respectfully and professionally with participants of various backgrounds and abilities.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working in event support, youth programming, or adaptive services.
  • For Adaptive Recreation: prior work or volunteer experience with individuals with disabilities.
  • Bilingual skills (Spanish/English or ASL).

Responsibilities

  • Creates, implements, and evaluates recreation programs and activities with a primary focus on adaptive programming or special events; researches and recommends program offerings; develops activity timelines; and schedules registration dates and related meetings.
  • Maintain supply inventories, prepare materials, and report equipment or facility concerns.
  • Enters and maintains program information in recreation management software for online and in-house registration; manages waitlists; generates reports; and ensures accurate recordkeeping.
  • Support volunteers, vendors, contract instructors, and community partners during events.
  • Serves as point of contact for recreation staff and programs; training and overseeing seasonal staff; and serving as the point of contact for on-site and off-site facilities.
  • Addresses customer complaints, facility concerns, and custodial or maintenance needs; oversees financial transactions at the front desk; and reconciles income reports at the end of each shift when serving as point of contact.
  • Oversee scheduling of programs and rentals across multiple parks and facilities during point of contact shifts.
  • Assist in the setup, breakdown, cleaning, and safe operation of program areas, facilities, and event spaces.
  • Support participant check-in, registration processes, program tracking, and customer service duties.
  • Monitor participants to ensure safety, rule compliance, and positive engagement.
  • Uphold City policies, safety guidelines, customer service standards, and departmental procedures.
  • Assists with marketing and promotional activities, including distributing flyers, updating bulletin boards, and supporting social media content.
  • Participates in departmental meetings, staff training, and community engagement efforts as needed.
  • Provides support for other recreation programs, events, or facilities during peak periods, staffing shortages, or special activities.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
