About The Position

Under the general direction of the Senior Services Director, the Adaptive Recreation Program Manager provides structural leadership, program oversight, and system development to support and scale adaptive recreation services for older adults and adults with adaptive needs or behavioral health challenges. This position ensures high-quality, inclusive, and person-centered programming while empowering subject matter experts to lead program delivery. This job class is treated as FLSA Exempt.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in adaptive recreation, therapeutic recreation, outdoor education, special education, or related field.
  • Five (5) years work experience working in adaptive recreation, therapeutic recreation, special education, or related field.
  • Two (2) years of supervisory and managing program experience required.
  • Knowledge of the history, culture, laws, rules, ordinances, customs, and traditions of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community.
  • Knowledge of coordinating and implementing services suited to the needs of people with disabilities.
  • Knowledge of the best practices, issues, behavioral characteristics, and techniques associated with individuals with disabilities.
  • Knowledge of applicable local, State, and Federal policies, procedures, regulations, and fiscal management.
  • Knowledge of community resources for individuals with disability.
  • Knowledge of first aid methods and safety precautions used in recreational work.
  • Knowledge of customer service methods and procedures.
  • Knowledge of methods to motivate, supervise, and evaluate staff and to develop and implement staff training programs.
  • Knowledge of methods involved in planning, organizing, conducting, and evaluating recreational program activities.
  • Knowledge of fiscal procedures and practices.
  • Knowledge of adaptive recreation programs and organizations.
  • Skill developing guidance standards, practices, and procedures.
  • Skill assisting with the assessment and preparation of employee performance appraisals.
  • Skill with a personal computer, including MS Office software.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with public and Tribal officials, representatives of various agencies, organizations, and groups, plus members of the Community.
  • Skill in work management and work leadership, including scheduling of multiple projects.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff and the public.
  • Ability to plan, evaluate, organize, and direct an adequate, well-rounded program of services adapted to community preference and needs.
  • Ability to demonstrate exemplary customer service.
  • Ability to foster quality and respectful working relationships and instill a team leadership approach.
  • Ability to facilitate meetings and lead special project teams.
  • Ability to identify problems and propose and implement solutions.
  • Must be 21 years of age at time of hire.
  • Will be required to pass a pre-employment background/fingerprint check.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree preferred.
  • Three (3) years related experience with a Master’s degree.
  • Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) or certified Applied Behavior Analysis Therapy preferred.
  • Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience that would allow the candidate to satisfactorily perform the duties of this position, will be considered.
  • An enrolled Community Member whom closely qualifies for the minimum qualifications for a position may be considered for employment under SRPMIC Policy 2-19, Underfill.

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership and support to Adaptive Recreation Coordinators while preserving professional autonomy in program delivery.
  • Provides guidance, structure, resources, and strategic direction of assigned staff.
  • Develops and maintains a set of performance standards, practices, and procedures for program planning and implementation.
  • Coordinates staff disciplinary actions and measures in accordance with Tribal Government policies, practices and procedures when necessary.
  • Monitors staff performance and prepares timely Employee Performance Appraisal Reports (EPAR) for assigned staff.
  • Recognizes staff achievements and identify opportunities for continual growth and improvement.
  • Review and process staff timesheets to ensure compliance of time records for approval.
  • Foster a culture of inclusion, accountability, and high-quality service delivery.
  • Ensure staff have the tools, resources, and support necessary to deliver high-quality adaptive programming.
  • Design, implement, and maintain program infrastructure, including intake processes, referral pathways, scheduling systems, and documentation standards.
  • Oversee inclusion efforts supporting individuals with disabilities into mainstream recreation programming.
  • Monitor program effectiveness using participation data, feedback, and comparative analysis.
  • Conducts program evaluations for future program development.
  • Compiles data and delivers reports to Directors, managers, committees and/or council.
  • Guides staff in organizing and coordinating special events, family activities, and a variety of workshops and seminars related to recreation and social development.
  • Plans, develops, and implements outreach to increase overall participation, as well as the dissemination of information for programs and events.
  • Demonstrates exemplary respect for all facility patrons, outstanding customer service always, and sets the example for assigned staff.
  • Ensures facilities are properly prepared and taken down for program activities and events.
  • Ensures program compliance with pertinent laws, policies, procedures, SRPMIC ordinances, rules, regulations, and licensing standards.
  • Research, establishes, and implements selected trauma-informed behavior management models.
  • Works with division managers to ensure staff are practicing inclusive and trauma-informed methods within all programs.
  • Works closely with all department managers to ensure Adaptive Coordinators are effectively serving Adaptive registered participants and providing guidance on behavior challenges.
  • Stays informed and up to date with best practices.
  • Responds to and communicates with participants, family, co-workers, and the public effectively, professionally, courteously, and thoroughly, including in the handling of complaints and concerns.
  • Works closely with other departments/divisions to coordinate programs and provide adaptive recreation services.
  • May provide transportation to participants for day trips, using handicap accessible vans or securing other types of transportation.
  • May be required to work weekends, nights, holidays, or to be called back to work in emergencies or as needed to provide necessary services to the public.
  • Elevates to the Recreation and Senior Services Director all issues and matters of concern regarding emergencies, accidents, incidents, discipline, conflicts amongst staff, and facilities staff.
  • Develops, prepares, submits, and monitors the annual budget; develops budget justifications and makes budget recommendations to management.
  • Enforces, implements, and complies with all applicable policies and procedures, evaluates their effectiveness, and recommends changes.
  • Prepares and maintains various written reports, including, but not limited to, quarterly program reports, program attendance, survey results, incident reports, and activities’ service log.
  • Works to promote Adaptive Recreation services through positive public relations efforts and quality patron satisfaction.
  • May assist in grant or RFP proposals to obtain needed services, funds, etc.
  • Develops and reviews reports related to program services; presents reports to the department directors as necessary.
  • Consults with other Program Managers and the Department Director regularly regarding AAR activities and programs.
  • Advises management in the development of program strategies, goals, and objectives.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned by the Assistant Director and/or Director
