Railcar Cleaner I
About The Position
Guardian Rail is hiring a Railcar Cleaner I at its Lynchburg Tank Shop in Lynchburg, Virginia. The role is responsible for cleaning railcar interiors and inspecting, caring for, and maintaining equipment used in the cleaning process. Work includes safely entering confined spaces while wearing PPE that may restrict movement and sight, sometimes in limited lighting, to clean tank and hopper cars according to work orders and company procedures. Employees inspect cleaned interiors against customer, FRA, AAR, and Guardian Rail requirements and complete required cleaning checklists. The position involves heavy, hands-on mechanical work in varied indoor and outdoor conditions and requires following safety, environmental, and quality procedures.
Requirements
- Read, write, and communicate in English at a proficient level.
- Learn job-specific operational details and pass an exam demonstrating knowledge.
- Learn, follow, and complete required recordkeeping for Guardian Rail EHS, quality assurance, and cleaning policies, procedures, and checklists.
- Knowledge of equipment and tools required for safe entry and cleaning.
- Prioritize and perform multiple tasks with attention to detail.
- Follow oral and written instructions.
- Wear and care for required PPE, including steel-toed boots, eye protection, hearing protection, gloves, respirators, and protective suits.
- Pass the required fitness-for-duty examination.
- Ability to work in confined spaces.
- Ability to perform physical, heavy hands-on work, including climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, and grasping.
Responsibilities
- Interpret work orders and clean railcar interiors according to required procedures.
- Coordinate and complete cleaning efficiently and within assigned hours.
- Notify the supervisor about materials or equipment needed to complete tasks.
- Work with crew members and supervisors in a team environment.
- Follow safety rules, maintain a clean work area, and comply with Guardian Rail Environmental Health and Safety policies.
- Follow company quality processes and procedures, applicable AAR and FRA rules and regulations, and client-specific procedures.
- Inspect cleaned railcar interiors for compliance with customer, FRA, AAR, and Guardian Rail requirements.
- Complete cleaning checklists and required records.
- Perform other general labor duties as assigned.
- Inspect, care for, and maintain equipment used in the cleaning process.
