Railcar Cleaner I
About The Position
Railcar Cleaner I is responsible for cleaning railcar interiors and inspecting, caring for, and maintaining the equipment used in the cleaning process. The role involves reading and following work orders, safely entering confined spaces while wearing personal protective equipment that may restrict movement and sight, and cleaning tank and hopper cars in limited lighting. Employees inspect cleaned railcar interiors against customer, FRA, AAR, and Guardian Rail requirements and complete required cleaning checklists. The position requires following Guardian Rail’s Environmental Health and Safety policies, safety rules, quality processes, and applicable client-specific procedures. It is based at the Amarillo Tank Shop in Amarillo, Texas, and involves heavy, hands-on mechanical work both indoors and outdoors in varied weather and environmental conditions.
Requirements
- Read, write, and communicate English proficiently.
- Learn job-specific operational details and pass an exam demonstrating knowledge.
- Learn and follow Guardian Rail EHS, QA, and cleaning policies and procedures, including required recordkeeping and checklists.
- Have knowledge of equipment and tools required for safe entry and cleaning.
- Prioritize and perform multiple tasks with attention to detail.
- Follow oral and written instructions.
- Wear and care for required personal protective equipment, including steel-toed boots, eye protection, hearing protection, gloves, respirators, and protective suits as needed.
- Pass the fitness-for-duty examination.
- Be able to work in confined spaces.
- Perform physical activities including climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, smelling, and using visual acuity, color perception, and depth perception.
Responsibilities
- Interpret work orders and clean railcar interiors according to required procedures.
- Coordinate and complete cleaning efficiently and within assigned hours.
- Notify the supervisor of materials or equipment needed to complete job tasks.
- Work with crew members and supervisors in a team environment.
- Follow safety rules, keep the work area clean, and comply with Guardian Rail Environmental Health and Safety policies.
- Follow company quality processes and procedures, applicable AAR and FRA rules and regulations, and client-specific procedures.
- Inspect clean railcar interiors for compliance with customer, FRA, AAR, and Guardian Rail requirements.
- Complete required cleaning checklists and recordkeeping.
- Care for and maintain equipment used in the cleaning process.
- Perform other general labor duties as assigned.
