2027 Internship - Radio Frequency (RF) Systems Test Engineer - Electronic Warfare

Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory•Laurel, MD

About The Position

APL is seeking curious and collaborative interns to contribute to the development, analysis, testing, and evaluation of current and next-generation electronic warfare capabilities. Projects may involve RF hardware prototyping, modeling and simulation, test and evaluation, operational readiness, and reliability analysis. Interns work alongside engineers, physicists, mathematicians, and scientists across the development and evaluation process, which may include early analysis, simulation, laboratory testing, field testing, and technical communication. Interns may also present their work in briefings to technical staff and project leaders. The internship provides opportunities to model, analyze, develop, integrate, and test RF and EW systems; build software, algorithms, simulations, or data-analysis tools; gain experience with laboratory systems; and support testing, data analysis, and communication of technical findings.

Requirements

  • Be pursuing a B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in Electrical, Computer, Mechanical, or Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, or a related technical field.
  • Have an interest in RF systems, communications, signal processing, software, modeling and simulation, hardware, test and evaluation, or data analysis.
  • Have strong communication skills and work effectively with technical team members and leaders.
  • Have applied technical skills through coursework, research, projects, internships, or related activities.
  • Have experience with at least one programming language or technical computing environment.
  • Be willing to learn new math, physics, engineering, and computing concepts as needed.
  • Be able to obtain an Interim Secret security clearance by the start date and ultimately obtain a Secret-level clearance; U.S. citizenship is required for eligibility.
  • Have a minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale.
  • Provide a copy of college transcripts when prompted; unofficial transcripts are acceptable.

Nice To Haves

  • Coursework, research, project, internship, or other experience with RF systems, communications, digital signal processing, radar, embedded systems, modeling and simulation, software development, or test and evaluation.
  • Experience programming in MATLAB, Python, C, C++, or a similar language.
  • Experience with RF and electronics hardware such as software-defined radios, FPGAs, microcontrollers, antennas, or laboratory test equipment.
  • An active Secret or higher-level security clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Model, analyze, develop, integrate, and test RF and electronic warfare systems.
  • Build software, algorithms, simulations, or data-analysis tools using principles from communications, signal processing, RF engineering, physics, mathematics, or computer science.
  • Gain experience with laboratory systems that may include software-defined radios, antennas, embedded systems, signal generators, spectrum analyzers, and hardware-in-the-loop test environments.
  • Support laboratory and field testing, analyze data, and communicate technical findings to the team.
  • Share work through briefings with technical staff and project leaders.
