About The Position

At STERIS, we help our Customers create a healthier and safer world by providing innovative healthcare and life science product and service solutions around the globe. Position Summary Radiation Technology Center play a fundamental role in the qualification of new products going to market as well as various testing requests from laboratories, educational institutions, or other businesses interested in exposing their project to gamma radiation. Before Customers process their products at our large production sites, they must go through the Radiation Technology Center. The core function of the Radiation Technician II is to safely process Customer product utilizing a custom, low energy, gamma source for technical applications which can achieve extremely tight dose ranges. Applications include materials testing, research and development, dose audits (routine confirmation of sterility), and min/max dose testing. The Radiation Technician II is responsible for production within the Radiation Technology group of STERIS AST. The Radiation Technician II is proficient in executing protocol/dose mapping, understands machine faults/breakdowns and assists maintenance with repairs. This role has extensive knowledge in the set-up and processing of source loading tests, and assists training the Radiation Technician I on all tasks and responsibilities. The Radiation Technician II oversees the receiving, configuration, prepping, product prioritizing (managing same day, priority, and routine turn times), planning (cycle times, dose ranges, product-to-product compatibility within the cell), irradiator operation, radiation safety, product installation / calculation for reinstallation / removal, dosimeter reading, and product shipping. The Radiation Technician II processes a vast range of products such as pharmaceuticals, medical/surgical devices, tissue samples, viruses (for R&D purposes), nuclear reactor components, soil, and a variety of other requests from our Customers.

Requirements

  • Minimum two (2) years as a Radiation Technician / Gamma Operator or equivalent laboratory or sterilization work experience.
  • Subject to passing Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) required background check.
  • Ability to effectively read, write and verbally communicate.
  • Ability to work independently under general guidelines and supervision.
  • Requires effective interpersonal skills as demonstrated through prior experience.
  • Requires computer literacy to include word processing, spreadsheet and software capabilities.
  • Above average organizing, analyzing and a minimum of Level 3 math skills (ratios, proportions basic algebra) to determine organizational, Customer, and regulatory problems to formulate corrective action plans; attention to detail.
  • Ability to adapt to changing duties and responsibilities.
  • Normal hearing range sufficient to hear alarms.

Responsibilities

  • Protect Customer product by assuring proper processing and handling according to operating procedures; monitors process cycle times and control systems to ensure operation within Customer, quality, regulatory and internal company specifications; reviews and completes all appropriate processing documentation.
  • Operates a Gamma Irradiator; understands machine faults/breakdowns and assists maintenance with repairs; plans installations (turn tables, position, product specifics) and calculates exposure times; responds to process and equipment alarm conditions and acting within operational and safety guidelines.
  • Strives for continuous improvement by analyzing new or alternative ways to improve operations; incorporates staff recommendations into analysis; responds to audit activities in a constructive manner and uses findings to improve operations where possible.
  • Maximizes efficiency by monitoring process timers and associated product as scheduled; refers major repairs to shift Supervision or Maintenance personnel to keep the machine running at peak performance.
  • Maintains mechanical and technical skills, knowledge and abilities by attending workshops, reviewing trade publications, and participates in training Radiation Tech I.
  • Supports and can perform in all areas of the receiving process by preparing product for irradiation (orientation changing, repackaging, bundling), Customer data entry into the magement system, and provides guidance to Rad. Tech I and warehousing staff on the most effective way to orientate or reorganize product to achieve the Customers dose.
  • Verifies Customer paperwork and receiving information against what was entered into the operations management system.
  • Responsible for alanine dosimetry by labeling, placing, removing, and reading dosimeters. Removes and reads dosimeters from product and operates spectrometer. Completes dosimetry reports and performs daily and periodic dosimetry checks.
  • Conducts Customer protocols and dose mapping. Is proficient in preparing, documenting, and irradiating complex Customer projects such as non-uniform nuclear reactor components.
  • Supports and can perform in all areas of the shipping process by reviewing Customer shipping instructions, preparing shipping labels, and pairing products with their shippers and verifying label information. Ensures product is staged in the correct location for carrier pick-up.
  • Contributes to maintaining a safe and clean working environment by performing routine area housekeeping and reporting any unsafe conditions to facility management.
  • Ensures operations comply with document systems and procedures within the facility; supports local and corporate Quality Assurance directives along with applicable radiation safety standards required by state and federal regulations.
