Radar System Modes & Algorithms Lead

Honeywell Aerospace•Torrance, CA
•Hybrid

About The Position

At Honeywell Aerospace, you will lead the successful execution of radar signal processing, modes, and software functions across radar development programs. The work includes weather signal processing, waveform design and implementation, embedded radar software, software architecture, and development of future multi-mode radar capabilities. Working with the PI and other system leads, you will establish the technical approach and software capabilities for radar prototypes. The role calls for hands-on technical leadership of end-to-end radar signal processing, modes, and software development from concept through integrated prototype demonstration. The position is hybrid, with three days onsite and two remote, and is based in Torrance, California; Phoenix, Arizona; or Redmond, Washington. It reports to the Senior R&D Manager. Candidates must meet the U.S. person requirement: be a U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident, or have protected status in the U.S. under asylum or refugee status.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in a technical discipline such as science, technology, engineering, or mathematics.
  • Experience in radar or RF systems, such as radar modes, radar signal, or radar system experience.
  • Systems engineering experience in at least two of the following: requirements, design, specification development, modeling, simulation or performance analysis, and hardware/software integration, testing, and verification.
  • Must be a U.S. person as defined by U.S. export control laws and regulations: a U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident, or person with protected status in the U.S. under asylum or refugee status.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree from an accredited institution in a technical discipline such as science, technology, engineering, or mathematics.
  • Track record of solving difficult, complex problems through innovation, analysis, engineering, and experimentation.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, demonstrated by published results and public presentations in the field of research.
  • Ability to engage with customers and partners to define needs and requirements and develop creative solutions through rigorous analysis, engineering, and experimentation.
  • Ability to communicate ideas and results effectively to research sponsors, scientific peers, and business leadership through presentations, publications, and proposals.
  • Strong understanding of aircraft and avionics integration.

Responsibilities

  • Lead radar signal processing, modes, and software functions throughout radar development programs.
  • Develop weather signal processing, radar waveforms, embedded radar software, software architecture, and future multi-mode radar capabilities.
  • Establish the technical approach and software capabilities for radar prototypes in coordination with the PI and other system leads.
  • Define and develop radar system architectures, including subsystems, functional allocation, interfaces, data flows, hardware/software partitioning, and the hardware and processing required for an integrated radar system.
  • Develop radar modes from operational needs through mode definition, processing, resource needs, implementation, and integration.
  • Design and optimize waveforms, PRFs, bandwidths, timing, ambiguity, Doppler considerations, beam and scan strategies, dwell, revisit and update rates, coverage, and radar resource allocation across modes.
  • Develop radar signal-processing algorithms, including range/Doppler processing, detection, CFAR, beamforming, angle estimation, clutter suppression, and tracking, and implement and optimize them for real-time radar systems.
  • Develop and use MATLAB, Python, or similar tools for radar architecture, waveform and algorithm development, performance modeling, and measured radar data analysis.
  • Advance radar concepts, architectures, modes, waveforms, and algorithms beyond analysis and simulation into functional hardware prototypes or demonstrators.
  • Engage with customers and partners to define needs and requirements and develop solutions through analysis, engineering, and experimentation.
  • Communicate ideas and results to research sponsors, scientific peers, and business leadership through presentations, publications, and proposals.
