Radar Operator

RTX•Chesapeake, VA
•Onsite

About The Position

Raytheon operates and maintains the Navy’s three Relocatable Over The Horizon Radars (ROTHR), operated from the Consolidated Operations Control Center in Chesapeake, Virginia. The radar systems monitor and track aircraft and surface contacts across the Caribbean, Eastern Pacific, Central America, and South America. The mission primarily tracks and reports aircraft and ships suspected of carrying illicit narcotics. This is an onsite service-contract position supporting round-the-clock radar operations. The Radar Operator operates the ROTHR system using primarily PC-based platforms, assesses ionospheric propagation, selects radar frequencies and parameters, monitors radar resources and tracking software, validates and reports contacts, and interprets radar returns. The operator also monitors external communications and accesses track data through a GCCS terminal, receiving technical guidance and tasking from a supervisor or higher-level operator.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • At least three years of Watch Team, radar operations, or technical experience.
  • Experience with Windows 11.
  • Active and transferable U.S. government-issued DoD Secret security clearance required before the start date; an active existing clearance is required on day one.
  • U.S. citizenship, required for security clearance eligibility and any required export authorization.

Nice To Haves

  • Four years of radar operation and radar systems monitoring experience.
  • Previous experience on a Tactical Watch Team.
  • Air Defense Battery, AIC, or Field Artillery experience.

Responsibilities

  • Operate the ROTHR radar system, primarily using PC-based platforms, to monitor and track surface and air contacts.
  • Assess ionospheric propagation by manually modeling ionosphere layers using PC-based resources.
  • Interpret the ionospheric model and select frequencies and radar parameters to support detection and tracking of designated target types.
  • Monitor and modify radar resources as necessary to meet tasking parameters.
  • Monitor and assist ROTHR tracking software in validating and reporting aircraft and surface contacts within the radar coverage area.
  • Interpret radar returns to identify aircraft take-offs and landings.
  • Monitor and copy external communications relayed over UHF radio links.
  • Interact with a GCCS terminal to obtain pertinent track data.
  • Receive technical guidance and tasking from a supervisor or higher-level operator.
