The R&D Mechanical Engineer executes mechanical design, support, and research engineering tasks for new products in the robotics painting market. Assigned work varies in size and complexity and requires attention to engineering and design detail. The engineer designs robotic linkages, selects drives and peripheral components, and considers how design choices affect product performance, reliability, and cost. The role also resolves issues with existing products and installations by working with stakeholders on mechanical hardware concerns, including motion, electrical, and fluid-handling components. The engineer develops and releases component and assembly designs and drawings, performs or defines analyses, reviews commercial component options, and designs castings, weldments, drive components, and machined parts. The role includes establishing dimensions and tolerances using GD&T principles, addressing concerns raised by assembly technicians and suppliers, estimating design duration and labor cost, and releasing components and bills of materials in Oracle ERP. Additional work includes product validation and performance testing, cross-functional collaboration, project scheduling, and creating technical procedures, work instructions, and product documentation. Some business travel is required as needed. The position requires a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering and relevant exposure or experience in mechanical design and analysis through coursework, research, internships, co-op assignments, or industry work. The candidate should have foundational machine-design knowledge, CAD and engineering-calculation tool exposure, analytical and troubleshooting skills, and an interest in robotics, automation, and industrial equipment. Willingness to learn FANUC robot operation, programming, and robotic application development is expected.
