Specialties include support for treatment of cardiovascular, colorectal and thoracic conditions, women's health conditions, hernias, oncology, and obesity. Ethicon, Inc.—a member of Johnson & Johnson’s family of companies located in Raritan, NJ—is recruiting for a 2027 co-op in the area of Wound Closure and Healing. In this role, the Co-op/Intern will join a collaborative team of scientists and engineers which support new product development aimed at addressing unmet needs in wound closure with particular emphasis on antibacterial technologies and cardiovascular surgery.

Requirements

  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S.
  • Must have transportation to and from work daily
  • Ability to relocate to work on site in a laboratory environment
  • Completion of at least a first year of undergraduate academic program
  • Must be able to balance multiple projects and maintain organization
  • Must have the ability to work individually as well as on a team
  • Must have good interpersonal and communication skills
  • Must be proficient with Microsoft Office including Word, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Excel
  • Candidates must be actively enrolled in an accredited University for the duration of the Internship assignment pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree.
  • A minimum GPA of 2.8 is required, but a GPA of 3.0 or higher is strongly preferred
  • Must either be Sophomore, Junior, or Senior students in the active school year.
  • Ability to work closely with technical and non-technical personnel
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills, intellectual curiosity, and a dedication to delivering the highest quality of work with attention to detail
  • High level of organization and ability to balance multiple projects/initiatives while achieving results
  • Must be a self-starter. Comfortable working both independently and with a team.
  • Permanently authorized to work in the U.S., must not require sponsorship of an employment visa (e.g., H-1B or green card) at the time of application or in the future.
  • Students currently on CPT, OPT, or STEM OPT usually requires future sponsorship for long term employment and do not meet the requirements for this program unless eligible for an alternative long-term status that does not require company sponsorship.

Responsibilities

  • Hands-on laboratory work in engineering laboratories
  • Utilizing bespoke machining processes for novel medical device builds and evaluation
  • Attending and participating in Voice-of-Customer (VOC) labs with surgeons
  • Working with teams to design key project studies
  • Testing and characterization of prototype devices and competitive products
  • Good documentation practices, including writing test protocols, generating final reports, and documenting meeting minutes
  • Collaborating with engineers and outside suppliers to support project related activities
  • Generating 3D Models and 3D printing them to support/develop test methods and fixtures
