Quantum Measurement Engineer

Microsoft•Redmond, WA
•$102,100 - $219,200

About The Position

Microsoft Quantum is developing a scalable quantum computing system through a full-stack approach spanning materials, devices, systems, and cloud services. Its hardware strategy is centered on topological qubits, which rely on sophisticated nanofabrication of hybrid semiconductor–superconductor devices and stringent control of interfaces, materials quality, and process integration. The Quantum Measurement Engineer will play a leading role in developing materials and system components. The role works closely with specialists in materials science, nanofabrication, and device design in a fast-paced, interdisciplinary R&D environment, using measurement and characterization to advance quantum devices and practices.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Physics, Engineering, or a related field and 2+ years of experience in industry or an R&D environment; or a master's degree in Physics, Engineering, or a related field; or equivalent experience.
  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer, and/or government security screening requirements, including passing the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire or transfer and every two years thereafter.
  • Ability to provide citizenship or qualifying status documentation for eligibility assessment concerning access to export-controlled information; citizenship will be verified with a valid passport, with other documents applicable to lawful permanent residents, refugees, and asylees.
  • Ability to leverage AI tools for innovation and efficiency, such as performance modeling and analysis, research gathering, and task automation.
  • Ability to design and build AI agents or copilots for experiment setup, log triage, measurement report generation, protocol templating, and knowledge retrieval.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree in Physics, Engineering, or a related field and 5+ years of industry or R&D experience; or a master's degree in a related field and 3+ years of industry or R&D experience; or a doctorate in a related field; or equivalent experience.
  • Experimental experience with cryogenic RF and transport characterization of semiconductors, dielectrics, metals, and/or superconductors.
  • Experience with cryogenic electrical characterization of mesoscopic devices such as quantum dots.
  • Experience with data acquisition, programming in a high-level language such as Python or MATLAB, and version control such as Git.
  • Hands-on experience operating cryostats at 4K and colder.
  • Experience with solid-state-qubit-related measurements.
  • Experience with Six Sigma, statistical process control (SPC), and design of experiments (DoE).

Responsibilities

  • Design and execute experiments to characterize RF and transport properties of semiconductors, dielectrics, metals, and/or superconductors for qubit development.
  • Apply measurement techniques to advance quantum practices and devices, including qubit bring-up and characterization.
  • Identify opportunities to streamline and automate quantum measurements, including applying AI methods where appropriate.
  • Use technical input from materials science, microwave engineering, and quantum device physics to drive improvements in device performance.
  • Embody Microsoft’s culture and values.
