Senior Quantum Engineer

Microsoft•Redmond, WA
•$119,800 - $261,000

About The Position

At Microsoft Quantum, the team is working to develop the first scalable, fault-tolerant quantum computer, advancing quantum hardware, error correction, and integration with Azure. The Senior Quantum Engineer will design and test the readout system for topological qubits at component, subsystem, and system levels. The role provides an opportunity to develop systems engineering and quantum measurement expertise while working on fast-paced, interdisciplinary teams.

Requirements

  • Doctorate in Physics, Engineering, or a related field and at least 1 year of industry or research and development experience (which may include postdoctoral research); or a master's degree in one of these fields and at least 4 years of such experience; or a bachelor's degree in one of these fields and at least 6 years of such experience; or equivalent experience.
  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer, and/or government security screening requirements, including passing the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire or transfer and every two years thereafter.
  • Provide proof of citizenship, U.S. permanent residency, or other protected status for export-control eligibility assessment; citizenship will be verified with a valid passport. Lawful permanent residents, refugees, and asylees may use other documents where applicable.

Nice To Haves

  • Doctorate in Physics, Engineering, or a related field and at least 3 years of industry or research and development experience (which may include postdoctoral research); or a master's degree in one of these fields and at least 6 years of such experience; or a bachelor's degree in one of these fields and at least 8 years of such experience; or equivalent experience.
  • Proficiency with at least one RF readout technique used in solid-state qubit devices, such as RF-SETs or dispersive readout.
  • Experience with semiconductor devices or spins in semiconductors.
  • Experience with cryogenic microwave experiments and low-noise amplifiers.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Design and test scalable readout circuitry for topological qubits.
  • Interface across teams to codesign the readout system with evolving qubit designs and control requirements, making efficient use of company expertise.
  • Document work; analyze, interpret, and present measurement results; and participate in opportunities to present to customers and network with peers.
  • Use engineering best practices to build tools and processes that enable progress in quantum research, and help develop tools for internal and external users.
  • Uphold safety standards and practices, comply with policies, adhere to safety requirements in varied work environments, and escalate issues with appropriate urgency; may assist in defining and implementing safety protocols.
  • Embody Microsoft's Culture and Values.
