About The Position

The Quality Inspection Lead helps ensure products, services, and operations meet customer standards and internal and external requirements. The role conducts inspections and tests, evaluates compliance with specifications and regulations, maintains inspection records, and trains less-skilled employees. The position may lead work across inspection, laboratory, and gage-room functions, depending on assigned duties. The lead coordinates and schedules shift work, delegates tasks, troubleshoots issues that could disrupt production, maintains supply inventories, communicates shift reports, supports safety meetings and department walks, and submits maintenance requests. The role also supports quality and compliance activities, including product dispositions, customer returns, calibration, certification, and reporting. The position requires a high school diploma or equivalent and at least 5–8 years of metallurgical or physical laboratory experience, an understanding of test equipment and laboratory procedures, or a combination of inspection and laboratory procedures. College-level mathematics, metallography, or mechanical engineering is a plus. The role works in a manufacturing and laboratory environment with usually moderate-to-loud noise and requires use of personal protective equipment in specified areas.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent education.
  • Minimum 5–8 years of metallurgical or physical laboratory experience, an understanding of test equipment and laboratory procedures, or a combination of inspection and laboratory procedures.
  • Technical skills in quality assurance and manufacturing processes, including production flow, layout, assembly, and inspection equipment.
  • Good understanding of geometric tolerancing per ANSI Y14.5.
  • Proficiency using calipers, micrometers, height gages, ring gages, pin gages, go/no-go pin gages, optical comparators, and microscopes.
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints, drawings, and specifications.
  • Basic familiarity with mainframe computer systems, spreadsheets, word-processing software, and database systems.
  • Ability to perform basic arithmetic and calculations using units and measurements of weight, volume, and distance.
  • Ability to solve problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Strong analytical, communication, teamwork, business-awareness, cost-consciousness, adaptability, planning, organization, and professionalism competencies.
  • Ability to stand, walk, or sit for extended periods; speak and listen; coordinate hand and eye movements; perform repetitive hand and arm movements; and use manual dexterity.
  • Ability to bend, reach to shoulder level, and lift, carry, push, or pull up to 30 pounds.
  • Close and distance vision, ability to adjust focus, and hearing within the normal or average range.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment, including safety glasses, hearing protection, or proper footwear in designated areas.

Nice To Haves

  • College-level mathematics, metallography, or mechanical engineering.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect semi-finished components, raw materials, precision-machined components, sub-assemblies, and close-tolerance fasteners for conformance to customer specifications, drawings, quality procedures, and industry standards.
  • Conduct detailed dimensional inspections using precision measuring equipment; determine inspection methods when required; inspect, adjust, and verify gauges and measuring instruments.
  • Maintain inspection reports and records, develop First Article inspection documents, review final inspection documentation, and complete scanning, filing, data entry, and product certification as needed.
  • Review calibration certifications and laboratory or gage certificates for compliance with applicable procedures and requirements.
  • Coordinate inspection activities with leads and employees, conduct preliminary reviews of product rejections, support rejection dispositions and customer returns, and assist the compliance team.
  • Perform and assist with physical and metallurgical tests on in-process and final production parts, including mechanical tests such as tensile, shear, fatigue, stress durability, installation force, and torque testing.
  • Prepare metallurgical mounts through grinding, cutting, polishing, and etching; perform sampling, raw-material verification, data reduction calculations, and photo macrographs and micrographs.
  • Analyze drawings and specifications to determine test requirements, procedures, and sampling plans; verify test-equipment calibration before use and maintain equipment calibration.
  • Verify job and material identification tags and documentation; move parts, materials, samples, supplies, and finished goods between designated areas; enter work-order information in the Shop Floor System.
  • Review laboratory test results, assist with shipping and receiving, stock and restock materials, sort parts when needed, and support the Preliminary Material Review Team.
  • Assist manufacturing, quality control, and engineering in determining conformance, researching test programs, conducting developmental and failure-analysis work, and writing or developing laboratory test reports, procedures, and work instructions.
  • Manage gages through the GageTrak system, control gage-room temperature and humidity, calibrate in-house gages, update tracking entries and calibration stickers, and manage test-bolt inventory.
  • Coordinate new-gage orders and internal or external calibration schedules, issue calibration due-date reports, review certifications, support engineering projects as a gage resource, and maintain measurement-of-uncertainty calculations.
  • Schedule production work for the shift, delegate tasks across assigned areas, troubleshoot bottlenecks, lead area projects, maintain supply inventories, and send beginning- and end-of-shift reports.
  • Lead or participate in PSM meetings and department walks, check machine equipment at the beginning and end of shifts, submit maintenance requests, and provide refresher training to inspectors, laboratory technicians, and other less-skilled employees.
  • Ensure proper PPE use, identify safety concerns, promote safety improvements, track and store assigned materials, and promptly report known or suspected nonconformance to management.
  • Follow company and governmental health, safety, environmental, and hazardous-material requirements; attend required training; report unsafe conditions; and contribute to initiatives that reduce environmental impact and waste.
