About The Position

Millennium Space Systems, part of Boeing Defense, Space and Security, is a fast, agile small-satellite company focused on national security space missions, including missile warning and Earth observation. The Quality Engineer (Build Reliability Engineer) identifies, resolves, and eliminates spacecraft and product manufacturing quality issues. Working with design and manufacturing teams, this role drives improvements in hardware reliability and initiates corrective actions. The internal job code is Quality Engineer, and the team is hiring at Level 3–4. The engineer partners with design engineering and manufacturing from product development through production to create quality plans for flight hardware. The role develops and validates test and inspection processes, monitors product and process performance, reviews build quality, investigates failures, contains non-conforming product, and supports continuous improvement and Lean production practices. The position requires travel up to 20% and is a second-shift role. Applicants must be U.S. citizens and eligible and willing to apply for and maintain a security clearance. This role is not safety sensitive and is not contingent upon a program award.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology (including Manufacturing Technology), Computer Science, Data Science, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, or a non-U.S. equivalent qualification directly related to the work.
  • At least 4 years of experience in a manufacturing or quality engineering role.
  • Knowledge of mechanical and avionics product manufacturing, assembly, test, and inspection processes.
  • Ability to read drawings, interpret specifications, and provide technical input to assembly and test procedures.
  • Intermediate knowledge of AS9100 quality standards.
  • Ability to obtain a U.S. Security Clearance; U.S. citizenship is required by the U.S. Government. An interim and/or final U.S. Secret Clearance after start is required.
  • Must be a U.S. Person as defined by U.S. export-control regulations.

  • Master’s degree in mechanical, aerospace, materials, or electrical engineering.
  • Demonstrated application of process controls in a high-volume manufacturing, test, and quality environment.
  • Commitment to adopting a Lean approach to quality without compromising safety or reliability.
  • Knowledge of quality tools and methods such as Lean principles, measurement systems analysis, design of experiments, statistical process control, root cause analysis and corrective action, advanced product quality planning (APQP), metrology, process failure mode and effects analysis (PFMEA), control plans, and problem-solving approaches.
  • Experience developing or supporting complex mechanical or structural assemblies.
  • Experience with advanced composites systems.
  • Experience with fluid component or valve assembly.
  • Experience with pre-preg lamination or curing composites.
  • Experience with CNC machining, forming, or bending.
  • Experience with bonding, drilling, fastening, or other assembly manufacturing processes.
  • Experience with avionics integration and testing.
  • Experience with fluid system pressure testing.
  • Experience with welding (OTW).

Responsibilities

  • Partner with design engineering and manufacturing through product development and production to create quality plans for flight hardware, including identifying key characteristics, prototype testing for functionality and manufacturability, first-article and detailed inspection planning, and considering past failures and lessons learned.
  • Develop, implement, and validate Lean test and inspection processes for new and existing products and processes, ensuring objective criteria and consistent achievement of quality goals.
  • Monitor product and process performance through production ramp-up using quality and analysis tools.
  • Conduct regular build quality reviews to ensure design intent is achieved and communicated; identify risk-reduction opportunities and simplify designs and processes to improve manufacturability.
  • Collaborate with integrated product teams to drive improvements and address high-impact and recurring non-conformances.
  • Investigate failures in production, test, and flight; identify and mitigate immediate and underlying root causes to reduce risk and improve reliability.
  • Contain suspect or known non-conforming product and guide inspectors, technicians, shop supervisors, and engineers on quarantine and rework activities.
  • Support shop-floor continuous improvement and advancement of a Lean, autonomous production system by creating standard rework and repair guides, removing redundant or unnecessary inspection, and improving control and optimization of critical processes.
  • Travel up to 20% of the time.

Benefits

  • Competitive base pay and variable compensation opportunities.
  • Eligible employees may enroll in health insurance, flexible spending accounts, health savings accounts, retirement savings plans, life and disability insurance programs, and programs providing paid and unpaid time away from work.
