Build Reliability Engineer - Millennium Space Systems

Boeing•El Segundo, CA
•$107,100 - $192,500

About The Position

The Build Reliability Engineer identifies, resolves, and eliminates spacecraft and product manufacturing quality issues. Working closely with design and manufacturing teams, the engineer helps improve hardware reliability and initiates corrective actions with manufacturing and engineering teams. The position’s internal job code is Quality Engineer, and the team is hiring at levels 3–4. The role partners with design engineering and manufacturing throughout product development and production to create quality plans for flight hardware. It develops, implements, and validates lean test and inspection processes; monitors products and processes during production ramp-up; and conducts build quality reviews to verify design intent and identify opportunities to reduce risk and improve manufacturability. The engineer also investigates production, test, and flight failures, supports containment and rework of non-conforming products, and advances continuous improvement and lean production practices on the shop floor.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
  • At least 4 years of experience and knowledge of mechanical and avionics product manufacturing, assembly, test, and inspection processes.
  • Ability to read drawings, interpret specifications, and provide technical input to assembly and test procedures.
  • Understanding of root cause analysis and corrective action methodologies.
  • Intermediate knowledge of AS9100 quality standards.
  • Must be a U.S. Person to meet U.S. export control requirements; applicants must be U.S. citizens and eligible and willing to apply for and maintain a security clearance.
  • Ability to obtain a U.S. Security Clearance; an interim and/or final U.S. Secret Clearance is required post-start.
  • Employer will not sponsor applicants for employment visa status.

Nice To Haves

  • Working knowledge of process auditing techniques to ensure compliance with defined quality requirements.
  • Experience performing and applying statistical analysis methodologies.
  • Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills, and enthusiasm for innovation and improving reliability in cutting-edge technology.
  • Master’s degree in mechanical, aerospace, materials, or electrical engineering.
  • Demonstrated application of process controls in a high-volume manufacturing, test, and quality environment.
  • Commitment to a lean approach to quality without compromising safety or reliability.
  • Knowledge of quality tools and methods, including lean principles, measurement systems analysis, design of experiments, statistical process control, root cause analysis and corrective action, APQP, metrology, PFMEA, control plans, and problem-solving approaches.
  • Experience developing or supporting complex mechanical or structural assemblies.
  • Experience developing or supporting advanced composites systems.
  • Experience developing or supporting fluid component or valve assembly.
  • Experience developing or supporting prepreg lamination or composite curing.
  • Experience developing or supporting CNC machining, forming, or bending.
  • Experience developing or supporting bonding, drilling, fastening, or other assembly manufacturing processes.
  • Experience developing or supporting avionics integration and testing.
  • Experience developing or supporting fluid system pressure testing.
  • Experience developing or supporting welding (OTW).

Responsibilities

  • Partner with design engineering and manufacturing through product development and production to create flight-hardware quality plans, including identifying key characteristics, prototype testing for functionality and manufacturability, first-article and detailed inspection planning, and considering past failures and lessons learned.
  • Develop, implement, and validate lean test and inspection processes for new and existing products and processes, ensuring objective criteria and consistent achievement of quality goals.
  • Monitor product and process performance through production ramp-up using quality and analysis tools.
  • Conduct regular build quality reviews to verify design intent is achieved and communicated; identify risk-reduction and simplification opportunities; and collaborate with integrated product teams to improve manufacturability and address high-impact or recurring non-conformances.
  • Investigate production, test, and flight failures and identify and mitigate immediate and underlying root causes to reduce risk and improve reliability.
  • Contain suspect or known non-conforming products and guide quality inspectors, technicians, shop supervisors, and engineers in quarantine and rework activities.
  • Support shop-floor continuous improvement and advancement of a lean, autonomous production system by creating standard rework and repair guides, removing redundant or unnecessary inspection, and improving control and optimization of critical processes.
  • Initiate corrective actions with manufacturing and engineering teams.
