About The Position

Millennium Space Systems, a part of Boeing Defense, Space and Security, is a fast, agile small satellite company focused on national security space. The Quality Engineer (internally coded as Quality Engineer) identifies, resolves, and eliminates spacecraft and product manufacturing quality issues. Working closely with design and manufacturing teams, the engineer drives improvements in hardware reliability and initiates corrective actions. The team is hiring at Level 3–4. The role partners with design engineering and manufacturing throughout product development and production to create quality plans for flight hardware. It develops, implements, and validates lean testing and inspection processes; monitors production ramp-up using quality and analysis tools; reviews builds for adherence to design intent; investigates failures; contains nonconforming products; and supports continuous improvement and lean production practices. The position is second shift, requires travel up to 20% of the time, and requires applicants to be U.S. citizens eligible and willing to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance. It is located at a facility requiring special access. The employer does not sponsor employment visas. The position is not contingent upon a program award and is not safety sensitive.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology (including Manufacturing Technology), Computer Science, Data Science, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, or a directly related non-U.S. equivalent qualification.
  • At least 4 years of experience in a manufacturing or quality engineering role.
  • Knowledge of mechanical and avionics product manufacturing, assembly, test, and inspection processes.
  • Ability to read drawings, interpret specifications, and provide technical input to assembly and test procedures.
  • Intermediate knowledge of AS9100 quality standards.
  • Ability to obtain a U.S. security clearance; U.S. citizenship is required by the U.S. Government. Applicants must be willing to apply for and maintain a clearance.
  • Must meet U.S. export control compliance requirements as a U.S. Person.
  • Must satisfy the Company's Conflict of Interest assessment process.

  • Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills, with enthusiasm for the team’s innovative spirit and mission to improve reliability in cutting-edge technology.
  • Master’s degree in mechanical, aerospace, materials, or electrical engineering.
  • Demonstrated application of process controls in a high-volume manufacturing, test, and quality environment.
  • Commitment to adopting a lean approach to quality without compromising safety or reliability.
  • Knowledge of quality tools including lean principles, measurement systems analysis, design of experiments, statistical process control, root cause analysis and corrective action, advanced product quality planning (APQP), metrology, process failure mode and effects analysis (PFMEA), control plans, and problem-solving approaches.
  • Experience developing or supporting complex mechanical or structural assemblies.
  • Experience with advanced composite systems or pre-preg lamination and curing composites.
  • Experience with fluid component or valve assembly or fluid-system pressure testing.
  • Experience with CNC machining, forming, or bending.
  • Experience with bonding, drilling, fastening, or other assembly manufacturing processes.
  • Experience with avionics integration and testing.
  • Experience with welding (OTW).

Responsibilities

  • Partner with design engineering and manufacturing teams through product development and production to create quality plans for flight hardware, including identifying key characteristics, prototype testing for functionality and manufacturability, first-article and detailed inspection planning, and applying lessons learned from past failures.
  • Develop, implement, and validate lean test and inspection processes for new and existing products and processes, ensuring objective criteria and consistent achievement of quality goals.
  • Monitor product and process performance during production ramp-up using quality and analysis tools.
  • Conduct build quality reviews to verify design intent is achieved and communicated, identify risk-reduction opportunities, and simplify designs and processes to improve manufacturability.
  • Collaborate with integrated product teams to drive improvements and address high-impact and recurring non-conformances.
  • Investigate production, test, and flight failures, identify immediate and underlying root causes, and mitigate them to reduce risk and improve reliability.
  • Contain suspect or known nonconforming product and guide quality inspectors, technicians, shop supervisors, and engineers in quarantine and rework activities.
  • Support shop-floor continuous improvement and development of a lean, autonomous production system through standard rework and repair guides, removal of redundant inspections, and improved control and optimization of critical processes.
  • Initiate corrective actions with manufacturing and engineering teams.

Benefits

  • Eligible employees may enroll in health insurance, flexible spending accounts, health savings accounts, retirement savings plans, life and disability insurance programs, and programs providing paid and unpaid time away from work.
  • Competitive base pay and variable compensation opportunities.
