Quality Engineer (Build Reliability Engineer) 2nd Shift - Millennium Space Systems

Boeing•El Segundo, CA
•$107,100 - $192,500•Onsite

About The Position

Millennium Space Systems, part of Boeing Defense, Space and Security, is a fast, agile small-satellite company focused on national security space missions, including missile warning and Earth observation. The Quality Engineer (Build Reliability Engineer) partners with design engineering and manufacturing to identify, resolve, and eliminate spacecraft and product manufacturing quality issues, improve hardware reliability, and initiate corrective actions. The internal job code is Quality Engineer, and the team is hiring at Level 3–4. The role supports products from development through production by creating quality plans for flight hardware, developing and validating test and inspection processes, monitoring production performance, and driving build-quality improvements. It also investigates production, test, and flight failures; supports containment and rework of nonconforming products; and advances continuous improvement and Lean production practices on the shop floor. This is a second-shift role requiring travel up to 20% of the time. The position is at a facility requiring special access. Applicants must meet U.S. export-control requirements and be eligible and willing to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance; U.S. citizenship is required for the stated clearance. The employer will not sponsor employment visas. Candidates must also satisfy the company’s conflict-of-interest assessment process. The role is not safety sensitive and is not contingent upon a program award.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology (including Manufacturing Technology), Computer Science, Data Science, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, or a directly related non-U.S. equivalent qualification.
  • At least 4 years of experience in a manufacturing or quality engineering role.
  • Knowledge of mechanical and avionics product manufacturing, assembly, test, and inspection processes.
  • Ability to read drawings, interpret specifications, and provide technical input to assembly and test procedures.
  • Intermediate knowledge of AS9100 quality standards.
  • Ability to obtain a U.S. security clearance; U.S. citizenship is required for the stated clearance, and applicants must be willing to apply for and maintain a clearance.
  • Must satisfy the company’s Conflict of Interest assessment process.
  • Must meet U.S. export-control compliance requirements as a U.S. Person.
  • Must be willing to travel up to 20% of the time.

Nice To Haves

  • Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills, enthusiasm for innovation, and interest in improving reliability in cutting-edge technology.
  • Master’s degree in mechanical, aerospace, materials, or electrical engineering.
  • Demonstrated application of process controls in a high-volume manufacturing, test, and quality environment.
  • Commitment to adopting a Lean approach to quality without compromising safety or reliability.
  • Knowledge of quality tools and methods, including Lean principles, measurement systems analysis, design of experiments, statistical process control, root cause analysis and corrective action, advanced product quality planning (APQP), metrology, process failure mode and effects analysis (PFMEA), control plans, and problem-solving approaches.
  • Experience developing or supporting complex mechanical or structural assemblies.
  • Experience with advanced composite systems or pre-preg lamination and curing composites.
  • Experience with fluid component or valve assembly, or fluid-system pressure testing.
  • Experience with CNC machining, forming, or bending.
  • Experience with bonding, drilling, fastening, or other assembly manufacturing processes.
  • Experience with avionics integration and testing.
  • Experience with welding (OTW).

Responsibilities

  • Partner with design engineering and manufacturing through product development and production to create flight-hardware quality plans, including key characteristics, prototype testing for functionality and manufacturability, first-article and detailed inspection planning, and consideration of past failures and lessons learned.
  • Develop, implement, and validate Lean test and inspection processes for new and existing products and processes, ensuring objective criteria and consistent achievement of quality goals.
  • Monitor product and process performance during production ramp-up using quality and analysis tools.
  • Conduct build-quality reviews to confirm design intent is achieved and communicated, identify risk-reduction and simplification opportunities, and collaborate with integrated product teams to improve manufacturability and address high-impact or recurring nonconformances.
  • Investigate production, test, and flight failures and identify and mitigate immediate and underlying root causes to reduce risk and improve reliability.
  • Contain suspect or known nonconforming products and guide inspectors, technicians, shop supervisors, and engineers in quarantine and rework activities.
  • Support shop-floor continuous improvement and development of a Lean, autonomous production system by creating standard rework and repair guides, removing redundant or unnecessary inspection, and improving control and optimization of critical processes.

Benefits

  • Eligible employees may enroll in health insurance, flexible spending accounts, health savings accounts, retirement savings plans, life and disability insurance programs, and programs providing paid and unpaid time away from work.
  • Competitive base pay and variable compensation opportunities.
