Quality Control Assistant

Capitol Engineering Co.•Phoenix, AZ
•Onsite

About The Position

The Quality Control Assistant performs in-process and final inspections of fabricated assemblies to verify weld quality, fitup, dimensions, materials, and compliance with applicable welding codes, approved Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS), shop drawings, and Capitol quality standards. The role identifies and communicates deficiencies, documents nonconformances, verifies completed corrective work, and maintains accurate inspection and quality management system (QMS) records. The assistant supports the QC Supervisor with nondestructive examination (NDE) coordination and activities, drawing and document review, welder qualification continuity logs, calibration records, and internal audit preparation. Independent NDE work requires qualification under Capitol's Written Practice per ASNT SNT-TC-1A. The position is performed on site in a fabrication shop, Monday through Friday, on a day or night shift, with flexibility potentially required to support inspection deadlines or production schedules.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • At least 2 years of hands-on experience in welding, fabrication, or quality inspection in a manufacturing or structural steel environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to visually assess weld quality and identify common weld defects and discontinuities in a production setting.
  • Working knowledge of weld symbols, joint types, and basic fabrication drawing interpretation.
  • Familiarity with Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) and ability to verify that weld parameters and techniques conform to documented procedure requirements.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate, organized inspection documentation.
  • Clear, professional verbal communication skills and ability to convey quality findings and corrective requirements directly and constructively to welders and production personnel.
  • Basic computer literacy sufficient to complete digital inspection forms, access job documentation, and communicate by email.
  • Ability to pass a drug screen and background check.
  • Ability to stand, walk, and move throughout the shop floor for extended periods; occasionally bend, kneel, reach, and lift or carry up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to perform close visual inspections and use handheld measurement and inspection tools in shop conditions.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment, including safety glasses, a hard hat, and steel-toed footwear, on the shop floor.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate degree or technical coursework in welding technology, quality, or a related field.
  • Familiarity with AWS D1.1 (Structural Welding Code – Steel) visual inspection acceptance criteria.
  • AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) credential or active progress toward CWI certification; support for obtaining the credential may be available.
  • Experience performing or assisting with nondestructive examination (MT, PT, UT) in a fabrication or industrial environment.
  • Familiarity with nonconformance reporting systems and quality management documentation practices.
  • Prior experience in an AISC-certified or similarly quality-audited fabrication environment.
  • Experience using fillet weld gauges, calipers, and other basic inspection tools.

Responsibilities

  • Perform in-process and final visual weld inspections in accordance with applicable welding codes, primarily AWS D1.1, and Capitol quality standards.
  • Evaluate welds against code and drawing acceptance criteria and identify weld defects and dimensional non-conformances.
  • Verify fitup, joint preparation, joint geometry, and root openings against applicable WPS requirements before welding.
  • Confirm welders are using and following the correct, current approved WPS.
  • Perform dimensional inspections of fabricated members and assemblies against shop drawings and applicable tolerances.
  • Inspect incoming materials with the Receiving/Inventory Coordinator to verify identification, quantities, and documentation against purchase orders and job requirements.
  • Communicate inspection findings, deficiencies, applicable requirements, and needed corrective actions clearly and constructively to welders and fabrication personnel.
  • Relay inspection hold points, witness points, and quality requirements to production personnel at appropriate fabrication stages.
  • Promptly report significant findings, recurring deficiencies, and unresolved quality issues to the QC Supervisor.
  • Support the QC Supervisor in providing corrective guidance and coaching to welders when technique errors or WPS deviations are identified.
  • Initiate and complete Nonconformance Reports (NCRs), recording objective evidence such as weld location, deficiency type, applicable code reference, and photos as required.
  • Identify and mark nonconforming materials and welds to prevent inadvertent acceptance or shipment pending disposition.
  • Verify corrective rework or repairs before re-releasing work for the next operation or final inspection.
  • Maintain complete, legible, organized inspection records in accordance with Capitol's QMS documentation requirements.
  • Assist the QC Supervisor with scheduling and coordinating NDE activities, including magnetic particle testing (MT), liquid penetrant testing (PT), and ultrasonic testing (UT).
  • Support shop-floor NDE activities as directed, including surface preparation, access coordination, and follow-up documentation.
  • Perform basic NDE methods when trained and authorized; independently performed NDE requires qualification under Capitol's Written Practice per ASNT SNT-TC-1A.
  • Review shop drawings and work orders to verify dimensional requirements, weld callouts, and applicable notes.
  • Verify production personnel are using current approved drawing revisions and immediately notify the QC Supervisor if superseded documents are in use.
  • Reference applicable welding codes and WPSs during inspections to apply acceptance criteria correctly.
  • Assist with welder qualification continuity logs, calibration records, and other QMS documentation as directed.
  • Support internal audit preparation and activities by ensuring records are complete and accessible.
  • Follow applicable documented QMS procedures and work instructions.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned in support of quality control operations and fabrication quality objectives.
