About The Position

The State of Connecticut, Department of Transportation (CTDOT), is accepting applications for a Qualified Craft Worker (Electrical) position at the District 1 Hartford Electrical facility. This is a full-time, 40-hour per week role on the first shift (7:30 A.M. - 4:00 P.M.), Monday through Friday. The primary function of this role is to perform electrical repairs, installation, and maintenance of the Department's traffic lights and highway illumination systems within District 1.

Requirements

Hold a current and valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with tank endorsement.
Possess a current valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A or B, reflecting the "tank endorsement," and a valid Medical Examiner's Card (MEC) at the time of interview.
Be willing to accept assignment to emergency duties, including snow and ice removal, whenever services are needed, including mandatory winter overtime from November 1 through April 30.
Be willing to stay at work for the duration of storm events, which may include holidays and weekends.
Maintain a 30-mile residency from the posted job location.
Bring a copy of your completed Employment of Relatives Form and Acknowledgement of Ethics Receipt at the time of interview.

Four (4) years of experience in tasks in the electrical trade.
Two (2) years of the General Experience must have been performing skilled electrical trades.
Possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications including possession and retention of a State of Connecticut electrical license (University of Connecticut specific).
Incumbents may be required by the appointing authority to possess or acquire and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications.
Have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility, and visual and auditory acuity and maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties of the class.
Considerable knowledge of and ability to apply standard tools, materials, methods, and standard electrical trade practices.
Interpersonal skills, oral and written communication skills.
Ability to prepare estimates and keep shop records.
Ability to utilize computer software.

Responsibilities

Perform electrical repairs, installation, and maintenance of traffic lights and highway illumination.
Lay out and install electrical conduit for power and lighting.
Repair electrical motors, controllers, switchboard panels, traffic lights, lights, power circuits, ventilating fans, electronic counting and traffic control devices, intercommunication systems, and electrical generators.
Install open and concealed wiring and lighting fixtures.
Maintain and repair unit heaters, fans, building maintenance machines and equipment, gas pumps, refrigeration units, diesel electric generators, movable bridges, and fire alarm systems.
Repair relays and switches.
Rewire motors.
Bend pipes.
Install, repair, and maintain oil burners.
Perform necessary safety testing of electrical equipment and keep required records.
Perform pole work.
Make estimates of time, personnel, and determine and obtain required materials on assigned tasks.
Keep necessary records.
Diagnose failures and perform drilling and patching to facilitate installations.
Assist in high voltage work.
Perform duties related to similar trade areas as required.
Act as liaison with other operating units and outside contacts.
Operate heavy equipment.
Respond to fire and/or crash emergency situations at state-owned airports.
