About The Position

The State of Connecticut, Department of Transportation (CTDOT), is accepting applications for a General Trades Worker position at the Region 3 office in Trumbull. This role involves performing highly skilled trade duties in various areas, including routine, preventative, and emergency maintenance for commercial and industrial facilities. The position requires diagnosing and resolving building component issues, changing filters, performing life safety inspections, and utilizing a State-issued tablet and email for communication, recordkeeping, work orders, reports, estimates, and maintenance schedules. The incumbent will also work with other trades and often work independently, requiring dependability and self-motivation. This role involves multi-tasking and taking initiative with limited supervision.

Requirements

  • Possess and maintain a valid driver's license
  • Four (4) years of experience in one or more trade areas
  • Two (2) years of the General Experience must have been performing skilled trade functions in one or more trade areas
  • Considerable knowledge of and ability to apply the standard tools, materials, methods, and practices of a variety of trade areas
  • Interpersonal skills
  • Oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to prepare estimates and keep shop records
  • Ability to utilize computer software

Nice To Haves

  • Graduate of a vocational or technical school with a diploma designating completion of subject requirements in a maintenance trade area
  • Experience troubleshooting and repairing across a variety of trades, including electrical, carpentry, painting, HVACR (heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration), masonry, and plumbing
  • Experience installing and repairing commercial doors and hardware
  • Experience troubleshooting and repairing faucets and flushometers for toilets
  • Experience in performing monthly life safety inspections
  • Experience with EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer) roofing repair
  • Experience working in a large facility or multiple commercial or industrial buildings
  • Experience using Microsoft 365, including Outlook, Excel, Word, and Teams

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose/troubleshoot and resolve interior and exterior building components typical to commercial and industrial buildings
  • Change various types of filters (air, fuel, etc.)
  • Perform life safety inspections
  • Utilize email and a State-issued tablet for duties, including communication, recordkeeping, handling work orders, preparing reports, making estimates of time, equipment, and materials, and for tracking preventative maintenance schedules
  • Work with other trades as required
  • Perform highly skilled maintenance and/or construction work requiring the application of trade skills, codes, and standard trade practices in a variety of trade areas including but not limited to: electrical, plumbing, carpentry, HVACR, glazing, masonry, painting work, etc.
  • Makes estimates of time, personnel, and material required on assigned tasks
  • Keeps necessary records
  • Performs duties related to the trade or trade areas as required
  • In smaller trade areas, may be the sole worker running a skilled trade area
  • At state owned airports may be required to stand by for and respond to fire and/or crash emergency situations
  • May operate and maintain heavy earth moving equipment
