About The Position

Western Connecticut State University (WCSU) is seeking a full-time Qualified Craft Worker (Carpentry) to join our Environmental & Facilities Maintenance Trades Department in Danbury, Connecticut. This position is responsible for performing a wide range of skilled trades duties across both campuses to ensure the smooth operation and maintenance of campus facilities, contributing to a safe and functional academic environment. Candidates must be prepared to work in various conditions. The Environmental & Facilities Maintenance Trades Department provides trades services for both campuses, encompassing plumbing, carpentry, electrical, and painting, along with equipment operation.

Requirements

  • Four (4) years of experience in the carpentry trade.
  • Two (2) years of the General Experience must have been performing skilled carpentry trades.
  • Considerable knowledge of and ability to apply standard tools, materials, methods and standard carpentry trade practices.
  • Skills interpersonal skills; oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to prepare estimates and keep shop records.
  • Utilize computer software.

  • Experience performing advanced level tasks in accordance with standard carpentry trade practices and codes.
  • Experience performing alterations, repairs and maintenance of structure and facilities.
  • Experience performing advanced level bench work, operating with such equipment as power saw, wood lathes, planers, boring, sanding and mortising machines.
  • Experience building and repairing cabinets.
  • Experience cleaning, sharpening, and repairing hand and bench tools.
  • Experience laying resilient flooring and Formica.
  • Experience estimating time and personnel, as well as determining and obtaining required materials on assigned tasks.
  • Experience maintaining shop records.
  • Experience working independently.
  • Experience performing duties related to similar trade.
  • Experience cutting glass and glazing windows.
  • Experience fabricating signs.
  • Experience acting as a liaison with operating units and outside contacts.
  • Experience operating heavy equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Performs highly skilled tasks in accordance with standard carpentry trade practices and codes.
  • Performs alterations, repairs and maintenance of structures and facilities.
  • Performs skilled bench work, operating with such equipment as power saws, jointers, wood lathes, planers, boring, sanding and mortising machines.
  • Builds and repairs cabinets.
  • Cleans, sharpens and repairs hand and bench tools.
  • Lays resilient flooring and Formica.
  • Makes estimates of time, personnel and determines and obtains required materials on assigned tasks.
  • Keeps necessary records.
  • In smaller trade areas may be the sole worker running a skilled trade area.
  • May perform duties related to similar trade areas as required.
  • May cut glass and glaze windows.
  • May fabricate signs.
  • May act as liaison with other operating units and outside contacts.
  • May operate heavy equipment.
  • May respond to fire and/or crash emergency situations at state owned airports.
  • Performs related duties as required.
