About The Position

The MSF Science Portal is an online platform that showcases the outcomes of MSF's research, including peer-reviewed medical publications, conference presentations, and other relevant content. The Publications Data Management Intern will work with the Project Manager to maintain and improve the platform. This includes regular data entry, data cleaning and manipulation, organizing projects and workflows, and performing descriptive analysis. The intern will also contribute to other projects such as website improvements, dashboard development, and communications support. A diverse student profile is welcome, with an emphasis on workflow organization, data management, experience with relational databases, and knowledge of medical sciences and scholarly publications. This is a 3-month, part-time internship (20 hours/week) starting in October, with a possibility for extension. The role is hybrid, requiring in-office attendance on Tuesdays or Wednesdays.

Requirements

  • Current or recent graduate of a Master’s level or higher program in public health or library sciences.
  • Familiarity with scholarly publications and data management.
  • Experience with or keen interest in project and data management.
  • Experience with scientific/medical publications.
  • Experience with relational databases.
  • Experience working with published medical literature and scientific journals.
  • Experience with or keen interest in medical topics that MSF conducts research in.
  • Ability to work independently with supportive supervision.
  • Initiative and confidence to ask questions.
  • Ability to seek out creative and alternative solutions to problems.

Responsibilities

  • Create a weekly list of new MSF-authored publications by reviewing PubMed, Google Scholar alerts, and other data sources.
  • Enter journal publications and conference materials into the Science Portal database using the content management system.
  • Support the Portal team in improving data cleanliness, which may involve direct queries to the database and updating data using SQL (Microsoft SQL Server) for bulk updates or manual cleaning.
  • Assist with optimizing workflow monitoring and efficiency, and project management.
  • Support communications and awareness-raising efforts for the Science Portal via public social media and internal platforms.
  • Work on various data visualization, data management, and communications projects based on strengths and interests.
