About The Position

This position is responsible for performing routine and specialized maintenance and repair of the municipal street and storm sewer systems. This includes manual labor, operating heavy construction equipment, maintaining right-of-ways, constructing transportation and drainage facilities, inspecting and maintaining storm water systems, applying herbicides and sealants, responding to floods, and cleaning streets of leaves and snow. Incumbents will be subject to passing a pre-employment physical and drug screen. Employees in this position shall reside within a thirty (30) minute driving response time under normal driving conditions to ensure emergency response.

Requirements

  • Completion of high school or equivalent.
  • One - two years’ experience of general construction.
  • Possess and maintain a valid unrestricted Driver’s License, except for corrected vision.
  • Possess and maintain a valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License, or obtain within ninety (90) calendar days or as scheduled.
  • First Aid/CPR Certification or obtain within ninety (90) calendar days or as scheduled.
  • Traffic Control Flagging Card or obtain within ninety (90) calendar days or as scheduled.
  • Forklift Operator Certification or obtain within ninety (90) calendar days or as scheduled.
  • Current Herbicide Application License or obtain within one (1) calendar year or as scheduled.
  • Possess and maintain a valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License and/or Air Brakes and Tanker Endorsements as assigned.
  • Must pass Level 3 of each of the 2 ACT/Work Keys – Applied Math and Applied Technology Tests through Lower Columbia College (LCC) OR provide passing certificates OR current employees of the City of Longview must have passed the City of Longview General Skills Exam.
  • Good field of vision, depth, and color perception, near, mid-range and far vision.
  • Communicate effectively both written and verbal.
  • Must be able to communicate in English with employees and use two-way radio.
  • Deal courteously and tactfully with the public and other city employees.
  • Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain public streets, rights-of-ways, alleys, parking lots, guardrails and bridges including repair and or replacement of concrete/bituminous/gravel; resurfacing, repairing or replacing roadway pavement, curbs, and gutters; sealing cracks in street surfaces; applying chip seal; filling potholes, joint and crack sealing, and/or, performing other related activities.
  • Maintain road shoulders, and paint bridges.
  • Assist in snow and ice control and removal.
  • Maintains and upgrades stormwater systems including pipes, catch basins, ditches, manholes, detention ponds, and bioswales.
  • Maintain storm drains including maintenance of catch basins, ditches and grates.
  • Installs sidewalks and wheelchair ramps.
  • Performs a variety of grounds maintenance activities, which may include applying herbicides; clean-up work; removing leaves from streets and catch basins; removing snow from streets and/or, performing other related activities.
  • Operate a variety of hand/power tools machinery, vehicles, and equipment, ranging from light to heavy, in order to complete a variety of activities and tasks, which may include: loading, hauling, placing, and dumping debris, leaves, rock, asphalt, and concrete; removing snow; applying sand, cinder, and/or de-icing chemicals to roadways; grading streets and alleys; and/or, performing other related activities.
  • Performs daily safety checks, preventive maintenance and operational repair activities on applicable vehicles and equipment utilized in day-to-day activities.
  • Performs other duties as required.
