About The Position

Dauphin County Public Safety is currently accepting applications for the position of part-time Public Safety Officer 2. This is an armed safety and security position requiring advanced education and/or experience and training. Public Safety Officers are charged with the safety, security, and protection of the buildings, facilities, and properties of Dauphin County. The employee in this position is responsible for performing essential functions related to monitoring buildings, ensuring safety and security, screening visitors, patrolling, responding to alarms, and maintaining logs and reports.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or an accredited equivalency program.
  • Pennsylvania Lethal Weapons Training - Act 235 Certification
  • Must be able to speak and understand the English language to include spelling, usage, and grammar.
  • Must be able to communicate clearly, in English, orally and in writing.
  • Must possess ability to maintain confidentiality regarding Department and/or County information and records.
  • Must possess ability to understand and apply Department and/or County policy and directives.
  • Must possess personal integrity and honesty.
  • Must possess the ability to work effectively with associates.
  • Must possess a high degree of alertness and ability to detect problems or potential problems.
  • Must possess knowledge and ability in the use of security equipment to include firearms, EDWs, chemical agents, batons, other defensive equipment, and restraints.
  • Must possess ability to maintain order and security effectively.
  • Must possess ability to react quickly and calmly in an emergency.
  • Must possess ability to enforce rules and understanding of individual and group behavior and attitude of individuals under restraint.
  • Must possess the ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Must possess the ability to maintain relationships with peers, superiors, and subordinates.
  • Must be able to obtain all training, certifications, and clearances as required by the Department of Public Safety policy or operational needs.
  • Must possess a valid Pennsylvania Driver’s License (OLN).
  • Driving conditions include driving in urban, suburban, and rural environments, day and night, adverse weather, congested traffic, construction zones and unfamiliar routes, frequent stops, starts and turns, sitting for extended periods while driving, entering and exiting vehicle repeatedly, maintaining alertness and situation awareness for long durations, and complying with all traffic laws and organizational safety policies.
  • Must pass a favorable pre-employment & criminal background check.

Nice To Haves

  • 1 year of security, corrections or law enforcement experience or a combination of experience and education/training in a related field preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor buildings to ensure safety and security of building visitors and staff.
  • Stand watches in accordance with post or detail requirements.
  • Screen building visitors for weapons and prohibited items prior to entry using electronic devices and/or manually and secure visitors weapons and/or prohibited items as necessary or required.
  • Observe behavior paying particular attention to suspicious persons, and signs or indications of a disturbance.
  • Make patrol rounds routinely both inside and outside of facilities and check and respond to alarm systems.
  • Identify and report all potential safety, structural and environmental hazards occurring on County property.
  • Respond promptly to any requests for security services, intrusion alarms, fire alarms, etc.
  • Summon and assist law enforcement and emergency services when necessary.
  • Administer First Aid and CPR/AED to injured or distressed persons on or around County buildings, facilities and properties (once trained and certified).
  • Quell disturbances and remove or assist in removing unruly visitors, employees or any persons that need to leave the premises.
  • Open and lock or secure doors, gates and other barriers, moveable or secure, as necessary or required.
  • Direct building visitors to appropriate buildings, departments and/or individuals.
  • Maintain lost and found, report lost items and secure found items.
  • Maintain and complete required logs, reports and forms as necessary or required.
  • Interact with all County departments, public agencies and the general public.
  • Operate telephone, portable radio, metal detectors and other security related equipment.
  • Monitor County buildings via CCTV, Card Access & Fire monitoring systems.
  • Patrol and secure Dauphin County Parks as necessary or required.
  • Provide security for County events.
  • Work overtime and/or mandated hours in accordance with operational needs.
  • Perform other job-related duties as required.
  • Attend meetings as required.
  • Attend training as required.
