About The Position

Grand Canyon University is seeking a full-time Public Safety Dispatcher to support the university community and help maintain campus safety and security. The Dispatcher operates the communications center, receiving emergency and non-emergency calls and after-hours requests; monitoring computerized alarm and access control systems; and providing police and EMS dispatch and radio communication management. The role requires the ability to work various shifts, including daytime, evening, and night shifts, as well as holidays.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Experience with information systems terminals, computerized alarm monitoring systems, computerized access control systems, or other computer or technical systems.
• Demonstrated ethical behavior and adherence to university standards and regulations and the legal environment.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills.
• Knowledge of and ability to accurately interpret applicable federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations.
• Ability to meet the physical requirements of the position and daily responsibilities.
• Good judgment and excellent conflict-resolution and mediation skills.
• Valid Arizona driver's license in good standing and ability to be insured.
• Must successfully pass a drug test.

Nice To Haves

• Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university in criminal justice, police science, public administration, political science, or a similar discipline.
• Experience in a 911 or dispatch center.
• Ability to type 40 WPM.
• Experience with Computer Aided Dispatch, Records Management System, and criminal justice systems.
• Ability to speak Spanish or another non-English language, including American Sign Language.
• Certifications in CPR, First Aid, and First Responder.

Responsibilities

• Receive, record, and relay service information by telephone and two-way radio in CAD.
• Record detailed information in logs as required.
• Maintain officer assignments and dispatch officers promptly based on their location to assist in deterring potential criminal activity and responding to emergencies.
• Dispatch requested calls for service during the tour of duty, supporting crime prevention and suppression, protection of life and property, apprehension and protection of offenders, preservation of peace and order, and enforcement of state statutes and university and housing regulations.
• Check that information for field officers is available so only authorized persons are admitted to buildings, and monitor controlled-access areas.
• Document disturbances and incidents and communicate with local law enforcement during emergencies.
• Cooperate with campus staff and external law enforcement agencies conducting investigations.
• Provide a positive example to students by supporting the university’s Doctrinal Statement, Ethical Position Statement, and mission.
