About The Position

The position serves as a psychosomatic medical consultant and physician at Kalamazoo Psychiatric Hospital, supporting the Edward, Shrier, and Palmer units. The physician evaluates and treats patients with mental illnesses, including bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and alcohol or drug dependency, and provides consultation on the relationship between psychiatric and medical diagnoses. The role also trains healthcare professionals and supports staff in medical case reviews.

The physician performs diagnostic and treatment services for medical and surgical conditions, prescribes treatment for acute and chronic diseases or disorders, and provides care to patients in state care or custody. Care includes physical examinations; assessing interactions between mental and physical health; evaluating injuries and illnesses; preventive health measures; identifying adverse drug reactions and interactions; and providing minor first aid to hospital staff. The position has unsupervised access to controlled substances and is subject to drug and alcohol testing because it provides direct healthcare services to hospital patients regularly.

Requirements

• Medical degree from an accredited school of medicine.
• Three years of post-medical-degree, full-licensure experience practicing medicine or osteopathic medicine and surgery.
• Michigan license to practice medicine or osteopathic medicine and surgery.

Responsibilities

• Evaluate and treat patients with mental illnesses, including bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and alcohol or drug dependency.
• Provide consultation regarding the relationship between psychiatric and medical diagnoses.
• Train other healthcare professionals and support staff in the medical review of cases.
• Diagnose and treat medical and surgical conditions and prescribe treatment for acute or chronic diseases and disorders.
• Provide medical care to patients in the care or custody of the state, including physical examinations and assessment of mental and physical health and wellness.
• Assess injuries and illnesses, provide preventive health measures, and identify adverse drug reactions and drug interactions.
• Provide minor first aid to staff at Kalamazoo Psychiatric Hospital.
