About The Position

This role gives you the chance to support inmates at the State Correctional Institution (SCI) at Mahanoy as they develop emotional stability and constructive behavior in a secure environment. Your work will help individuals build emotional resilience, develop healthier responses to challenges, and strengthen personal accountability. This position supports the mental and emotional well-being of inmates by providing counseling, assessment, and coordination of care. You will help guide treatment planning and support appropriate techniques to modify and manage inmate behavior.

Requirements

  • A master’s degree in psychology or a closely related field that includes fifteen graduate level credits in psychology or counseling.
  • Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within 3 months of graduating with a qualifying degree.
  • Successful completion of basic training in Elizabethtown, PA is required.
  • Must meet the PA residency requirement.
  • Must be able to perform essential job functions.
  • Must pass a background investigation and meet Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) compliance requirements.

  • Additional pay will be considered for those who currently possess or obtain licensure as a Social Worker, Clinical Social Worker, or Professional Counselor issued by the Pennsylvania State Board of Social Workers, Marriage and Family Therapist and Professional Counselors.

Responsibilities

  • Provide individual and group counseling that supports emotional adjustment and behavior change
  • Conduct interviews and administer psychological tests to assess needs and guide treatment decisions
  • Work with other departments, agencies, and mental health facilities to ensure inmates receive appropriate services
  • Offer support to assess housing unit inmates and staff as needed
  • Serve on institutional committees and contribute information for reviews and decision making
  • Act as a liaison for mental health services and help prepare inmates for community-based care
