About The Position

SCO Family of Services is hiring a part-time Psychiatrist for 21 hours per week, working at its Jamaica, Queens and Flatbush, Brooklyn locations. The Family Foster Care outpatient division serves approximately 900 children ages 1–20 who have been removed from their homes because of neglect or maltreatment. The division’s Mental Health and Medical Services staff screen children at admission and refer those with significant mental health concerns for treatment. Youth with more severe psychopathology may be placed in Therapeutic Family Foster Care, where initial and annual psychiatric evaluations and ongoing therapy are needed. Other youth may present with concerns ranging from adjustment disorders and disruptive behavior disorders, including ADHD, to emerging psychotic-spectrum presentations. The Psychiatrist evaluates children who may benefit from pharmacotherapy and provides monthly medication reviews when medication is prescribed. The role may involve working with biological and foster parents to gather history, consider whether children are suitable for return home, and provide psychoeducation to parenting figures. The Psychiatrist also participates in treatment team conferences and advises caseworkers about the indications and expected effects of psychotropic regimens.
