Job Summary The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner delivers services that may include substance use evaluations, psychiatric assessments, medication management, withdrawal management support, and treatment of co-occurring medical conditions. This position collaborates with physicians, psychiatrists, and a multidisciplinary care team to ensure high-quality, integrated patient care aligned with the MnTC treatment model. The role also provides education to patients, families, and staff on psychiatric and medical conditions and participates in on-call rotation as needed.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Advanced Practice Nursing.
  • Current licensure as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) in the State of Minnesota.
  • Certification as a Nurse Practitioner (NP).
  • Board certification as a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC), consistent with scope of practice under Minnesota Statutes 245I.04.
  • At least 1 year of experience as a licensed Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner.
  • At least 1 year of clinical experience in addiction medicine or addiction psychiatry.
  • Current DEA registration and authorization to prescribe controlled substances.
  • Eligibility to prescribe buprenorphine in accordance with federal guidelines.
  • Comfort and compassion in working with individuals facing life-controlling challenges, such as mental health issues and addiction.

  • At least 1 year of freedom from problematic substances.
  • Must be able to meet specific provider qualifications and scope of practice outlined in Minnesota Statutes 245I.04. Reference: Sec. 245I.04 MN Statutes
  • Must pass a DHS background study as required under MN Statutes, Chapter 245C and 245G.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in substance use disorder (SUD) treatment and/or withdrawal management settings.
  • Board certification in Addiction Medicine or Addiction Psychiatry.
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification.

Responsibilities

  • Completed admission medical history and physical examination within 24 hours of patient admission, in accordance with program and regulatory requirements.
  • Conduct comprehensive diagnostic assessments, including mental status examinations, substance use history, and risk assessments, to determine the presence of mental health and substance use disorders.
  • Diagnose and treat mental health and substance use disorders in accordance with Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5-TR) criteria and applicable Minnesota Statutes.
  • Identify and manage co-occurring mental health and substance use/addiction disorders.
  • Develop, implement, and oversee individualized treatment plans that address both psychiatric and substance use needs, ensuring medical necessity and clinical appropriateness.
  • Provide medication management services, including prescribing, administering, and monitoring psychiatric medications and controlled substances in accordance with state and federal regulations.
  • Order, interpret, and manage laboratory and diagnostic testing to support clinical decision making and ongoing treatment.
  • Provide clinical oversight of withdrawal management and associated medical conditions, ensuring safe and appropriate care.
  • Assess and diagnose mental disorders in individuals referred to treat specified mental disorders and provide consultation services to clinical staff.
  • Provide consultation and clinical direction to multidisciplinary staff regarding the psychiatric and medical needs of patients, including the biological aspects of mental health conditions.
  • Coordinate care with internal and external providers to ensure continuity of care and appropriate referrals when services are outside the program scope.
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary treatment team to support integrated care and positive patient outcomes.
  • Educate patients, families, and staff regarding psychiatric conditions, substance use disorders, medications, and overall health and wellness.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and compliant documentation in the electronic health record, including diagnostic assessments, treatment plans, medication management, and progress notes, in accordance with 245G and 245I requirements and relevant Minnesota Statutes.
  • Participate in on-call coverage as required to support continuity of medical and psychiatric care.
  • Demonstrate professional, ethical, and respectful interactions with patients, families, and staff in alignment with organizational values and standards of care.
