Summary/Objective The psychiatric nurse practitioner diagnoses prescribe medication, monitors medication side effects and participates in the treatment process. Essential Functions Completes initial Psychiatric Evaluation Evaluates all available clinical data (including laboratory and other instrumental reports) pertaining to clients’ physical status when needed. Performs clinical screening and referral of all conditions in need of consultation from medical, non-psychiatric specialties. Reviews and follows up on treatments ordered by other physicians. Obtains or reviews residents’ or guardian's signature on the Consent to Treatment with Psychotropic Medication at admission and annually thereafter. Prescribes follows up and reviews all prescribed neuroleptics. Reviews all non-psychiatric medical orders and prescriptions. Orders nonprescription first aid drugs (e.g., analgesics, antipyretics) as needed. Certification as a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Three years of professional experience. Must have and maintain a current Controlled Substances Registration Certificate from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. Must have a Controlled Substance License from the State of Maryland. Must have and maintain a current Maryland License to practice Registered Nursing, as well as Maryland Certification as a Nurse Practitioner Experience working with children and adolescents. Experience in community fieldwork. Supervisory Responsibility None Work Environment This position works in an outpatient mental care clinic. There will be frequent interaction with persons who are mentally ill, disabled, or emotionally upset. Mid to high-stress level.
