Protein Purification & Expression Scientist

Eurofins•Upper Gwynedd Township, PA

About The Position

The protein expression and purification team provides protein vaccine candidates and critical assay reagents to support target validation and identification during early discovery. This position primarily supports small-scale screening of protein antigens using 30 mL cultures and large-scale purification of recombinant proteins and nanoparticles using 5 L cultures. Weekly tasks include preparing buffers, maintaining instruments, tracking work orders, sanitizing chromatographic columns, keeping detailed records, preparing reports, and maintaining inventory. The role may occasionally provide hands-on support to the protein expression group and collaborates with the protein characterization group and other teams.

Requirements

  • BS with 3–5 years or more of post-graduate work experience, or MS with 1–2 years of graduate and post-graduate laboratory experience, in protein expression and purification of recombinant proteins.
  • Demonstrated expertise in research-scale (up to 100 mg) affinity-based FPLC protein purification chromatography.
  • Knowledge of affinity, charge-based, and size-exclusion protein separation techniques.
  • Proficiency in protein characterization techniques and protein-based assays, including Bradford protein quantitation, UV-Vis spectroscopy, SDS-PAGE, and Western blotting.
  • Strong command of aseptic technique and sterile cell culture performed in a biosafety cabinet.
  • Effective communication skills, ability to work independently, and ability to collaborate with others.
  • Meticulous attention to detail when following SOPs.
  • Comprehensive understanding of Microsoft Office applications.
  • Authorization to work in the United States indefinitely without restrictions.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of protein characterization by HPLC or UPLC.
  • Proficiency in automated, tip-based chromatography systems.
  • Experience in recombinant protein expression.
  • Experience with orthogonal protein characterization techniques, such as spectroscopy or MS.
  • Track record in bacterial or mammalian cell culture, including cell passaging, cell counting, determination of cell density, and preparation of dilutions.

Responsibilities

  • Support small-scale (30 mL culture) screening of protein antigens.
  • Purify recombinant proteins and nanoparticles at large scale (5 L culture).
  • Prepare buffers and maintain instruments.
  • Track work orders and sanitize chromatographic columns.
  • Maintain detailed records, prepare reports, and maintain inventory.
  • Provide occasional hands-on support to the protein expression group.
  • Collaborate with the protein characterization group and other teams.
