About The Position

Ajax Building Company is seeking a Project Accountant to support the financial management of active construction projects across the Southeast. This role is a critical partner to Project Managers and field teams, ensuring accurate project setup, contract tracking, and timely payment processing. This is a great opportunity for someone early in their accounting career to gain hands-on experience in construction finance while working on complex, high-impact projects. The Project Accountant plays a key role in keeping projects financially organized, compliant, and running smoothly from start to finish.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma required
  • 1+ year of accounting or related experience required
  • Basic understanding of accounting principles and financial processes
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work cross-functionally with project teams and vendors
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Outlook, and Adobe
  • High attention to detail and commitment to accuracy
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and adapt to changing priorities

Nice To Haves

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field preferred (or relevant coursework)
  • 2+ years preferred experience
  • experience with construction accounting systems is a plus

Responsibilities

  • Set up new projects in the accounting system, including job cost structures and project files
  • Enter and maintain subcontract, purchase order, and vendor information
  • Process and track change orders, ensuring accurate and timely updates in the system
  • Manage subcontractor and supplier compliance, including collection and review of required documentation prior to payment
  • Prepare and distribute lien waivers for subcontractors and suppliers
  • Coordinate with Project Managers and field teams to follow up on outstanding items and ensure accurate cost tracking
  • Process subcontractor payments, including printing and distributing checks in accordance with company procedures
  • Maintain organized and accurate project documentation and files
  • Assist in tracking and updating outstanding reports related to contracts, change orders, and compliance items
  • Ensure all accounting activities are completed accurately and in alignment with company policies and procedures
  • Support additional accounting and administrative tasks as needed
