About The Position

The Program Specialist, Housing provides paralegal support to the Pro Bono Center’s housing programs. This role provides direct support to the Managing Attorney of Housing, the Landlord Tenant Legal Assistance Network (LTLAN), and the Landlord Tenant Resource Center (LTRC) which provide free legal representation, advice, or information to both unrepresented tenants and small landlords who have residential housing disputes in the District of Columbia and serves over 4,000 customers annually. This is a one-year grant funded position that will end on June 30, 2027.

Requirements

  • Prior relevant work experience.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends for various Pro Bono Center clinics and events.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365.
  • Demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working environment.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Must be detail oriented and deadline driven. Able to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills. Must work well in a team environment and be able to interact, including in-person, with Bar members, volunteers, vendors, the public and Pro Bono Center and Bar employees.
  • Must work well under pressure, possess excellent organizational abilities, and be able to manage several priorities in a day.
  • Must be adaptable, creative, and self-motivated.
  • Ability to handle and maintain the confidentiality of highly sensitive information.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Experience working at a legal services provider or other non-profit organization.
  • Proficiency in Spanish, French, or Amharic.
  • Proficiency with Salesforce or other CRM software.
  • Experience with LegalServer or other case management systems.

Responsibilities

  • Provides support to LTLAN and LTRC hotline by conducting in-person and telephonic intakes.
  • Provides appropriate referrals to the in-court and other legal services providers.
  • Assesses customers to determine their legal needs and eligibility and communicates the LTRC procedures.
  • Provides on-site support at the LTRC to include serving as the first point of contact to customers, managing the daily list of LTRC customers, responding to inquiries, maintaining supplies and resources, and maintaining records of LTLAN and LTRC services.
  • Trains and provides technical support to law school volunteers.
  • Collects and inputs data for internal and grant reporting. Assists with maintaining compliance with grant requirements, correcting data, and producing reports detailing changes.
  • Updates material for self-represented litigants and ensures that updated materials are circulated.
  • Supports the Housing Right to Counsel Project.
  • Provides litigation support to case-handling attorneys, including client interviews, home inspections, assistance with recertifications, and other administrative support.
  • Coordinates with and supports other Pro Bono Center clinics and projects involving housing matters.
  • Supports on-site and off-site legal clinics, including staffing the Advice & Referral Clinic and other resource centers.
  • Inputs client, volunteer attorney and case management information into the PBC’s database. Makes improvements to the Pro Bono Center’s case management system and performs conflicts checks in the system for placement of cases.
  • Supports language access activities of the PBC.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
