Box•Chicago, IL
•$94,000 - $94,300•Hybrid

About The Position

The Program Manager I will join Box’s IT Operations PMO, which is building a more scalable approach to planning and delivering IT work. This hands-on role owns assigned projects and workstreams, provides structured project-management support, and maintains planning, reporting, documentation, and Agile practices across the IT Operations portfolio. The role works closely with experienced Program Managers and PMO leadership, with opportunities to take on broader program responsibility as experience and judgment grow. The Program Manager I leads lower-to-mid complexity IT projects from intake through closeout, coordinating technical and business partners and helping teams deliver work with clarity, visibility, and structure. The role supports portfolio data quality and reporting using tools such as Jira, Airtable, and Box; helps maintain healthy backlogs and Kanban practices; and identifies practical improvements, including the use of AI and automation. Box expects employees to work from their assigned office at least three days per week. The role is eligible for equity and benefits.

Requirements

  • At least 2 years of hands-on program-management experience with technology, IT, business systems, or cross-functional projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage project plans, milestones, dependencies, risks, decisions, and stakeholder communication.
  • Clear, concise written and verbal communication skills and strong meeting-facilitation ability.
  • Working knowledge of Agile practices, Scrum, or Kanban, and comfort managing changing priorities while maintaining visibility and structure.
  • Ability to take ownership without constant direction, ask for help when context or authority is unclear, and distinguish between coordinating an issue and owning its resolution.
  • Ability to independently build and defend a project plan, conduct risk and dependency analysis, and make scope, timeline, and escalation recommendations using professional judgment.
  • Experience with Jira or a similar project-management platform.
  • Strong comfort with spreadsheets, dashboards, documentation tools, and collaboration platforms.
  • Ability to independently evaluate, correct, and take accountability for AI-generated work.
  • Curiosity about systems, processes, and organizations; receptiveness to feedback; and interest in progressing from project execution to broader program ownership.
  • Availability to work from the assigned office at least 3 days per week.

Responsibilities

  • Own assigned projects and workstreams, leading lower-to-mid complexity IT projects from intake through closeout.
  • Develop practical delivery plans covering scope, milestones, dependencies, risks, decisions, and success criteria.
  • Coordinate technical and business partners to keep work moving, and facilitate meetings and working sessions that produce clear decisions and next steps.
  • Maintain accurate project status and communicate changes early; support project intake, planning, and portfolio data quality through Jira, Airtable, Box, and other PMO tools.
  • Prepare status reports, dashboards, and metrics for review by senior PMO team members.
  • Ensure project documentation is complete, current, and proportionate to the complexity of the work.
  • Help IT Operations teams maintain healthy backlogs and clear work definitions, supporting Kanban practices, flow visibility, retrospectives, and continuous improvement.
  • Identify recurring delivery friction, gaps, or manual work and suggest practical improvements using Jira, Airtable, AI tools, and automation.
  • Identify risks, dependencies, and delivery concerns early; resolve issues independently when appropriate and escalate or consult as needed.
  • Partner with senior Program Managers on more complex programs and workstreams, developing program-management, portfolio, Agile, and stakeholder-leadership capabilities.
  • Use AI to draft, summarize, analyze, and automate work, while independently evaluating and taking accountability for AI-generated output.
