About The Position

This part-time position is responsible for the planning and instruction of quality programs, ensuring that all activities are safe, fun and appropriate for the targeted age group and expectations of the department. Programs may include; Badminton, Baseball, Basketball, Cricket, Volleyball, and Move More Sports. Reporting to the Coordinator, Recreation, this part-time position is responsible for the planning and delivery of instructional activities and drills that are safe, fun and appropriate for the targeted age group.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 16 years of age
  • Completion of Secondary Education (Older Adults, General Interest)
  • Minimum of two (2) years teaching/program instruction experience
  • Standard First Aid and CPR C
  • HIGH FIVE® Principles of Healthy Child Development (children’s programs)
  • NCCP required for sports related programming
  • Strong knowledge and aptitude in a specialized field, depending on program (i.e. art history, including contemporary practice)
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Effective program planning and service delivery skills
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to work well independently and in a team environment

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with targeted age group
  • HIGH FIVE® Quest 2 preferred
  • HIGH FIVE® Sport preferred
  • Experience working with persons with disabilities
  • Certifications/workshops in a related field
  • Crisis Prevention Intervention or equivalent

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate program delivery, leading and coaching participants with a focus on quality participant experience, effective skill development, and positive social experience.
  • Foster a welcoming, respectful and safe environment for all participants
  • Develop and modify lesson plans to meet the varied needs and skill levels of participants
  • Understand and ensure compliance of all established rules and guidelines governing the safety and conduct of participants
  • Provide guidance and oversight of volunteers
  • Establish positive relationships and clear communication channels with all staff, participants, parents, and volunteers.
  • Maintain a safe and clean program space, including proper usage and storage of equipment.
  • Set-up and take down of program equipment in adherence with lesson plans.
  • Communicate deficiencies to supervisor.
  • Evaluate situations for potential risks and proactively take action to address such risks.
  • Communicate any action and/or concerns to supervisor.
  • Maintain a high level of professionalism and handle sensitive situations with mature judgement
  • Provide suggestions to Coordinator, Recreation on ways to enhance the program and the participant experience
  • Comply with all health and safety practices as it relates to the work, standard operating guidelines, and Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • Report incidents, concerns or site damage to Supervisor
  • Maintain and submit attendance records; complete additional program-related paperwork as required (eg. end of session participant progress reports, daily open/close program checklists)
  • Attend and participate in mandatory staff trainings and meetings
  • Perform other duties in accordance with department objectives
