About The Position

This position exists to support admissions and the museum store, conduct interpretive programs using a variety of techniques, assist in the daily operation of the site, mentor visitor services staff, and provide high quality customer service to guests of Mill City Museum.

Requirements

  • Two years of cash handling and retail or customer service experience.
  • Demonstrated high quality, positive customer service skills.
  • Strong organizational and personal computer skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate with a diverse public in a positive and friendly manner, in person and over the phone, and be responsive to inquiries and comments.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently problem solve and respond to visitor concerns with patience, empathy, and grace.
  • Ability to work independently, under supervision, and as part of a team.
  • Average math and computer skills.
  • Ability to troubleshoot software, hardware, and point-of-sale issues.
  • Strong understanding of retail and money handling procedures.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to bend, crouch, kneel to move merchandise and perform light cleaning duties.
  • Ability to lift up to 30 pounds
  • Ability to deliver effective verbal presentations in front of small to large sized groups.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as collaborate and contribute positively in a team environment.
  • Flexibility to adjust to changes in schedule and assignments.
  • Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse public in a friendly and open manner, while conveying information or teaching.
  • Flexibility to work a varied schedule of weekdays, weekends, and evening hours.

Nice To Haves

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience with ticketing and/or point of sale software.
  • Previous experience mentoring, coaching, training, and providing work direction for staff or volunteers in a visitor-focused setting.
  • Retail sales and admissions experience in a museum/historic site
  • Experience in museum or site interpretation, theater or storytelling.
  • Foreign language skills.
  • Knowledge of retail display and marketing techniques.
  • Knowledge of Minnesota and area history.
  • Experience working with children in an educational environment.
  • Experience in museum or site interpretation, theater or storytelling.
  • Familiarity with U.S. history.

Responsibilities

  • Perform admission duties and provide visitor information with a consistent high level of customer service and comprehensive knowledge of the site.
  • Sell merchandise and provide high-level operational assistance in the museum store.
  • Provide operational support and mentorship as a lead visitor services team member.
  • Receive, welcome and orient visitors to the museum.
  • Conduct interpretive programs to engage and educate diverse audiences at visitors to Mill City Museum.
  • Study, learn, and comprehend historical material in order to deliver programs effectively.
  • Support museum operations by performing cleaning, maintenance, safety, security, and other tasks in support of ongoing operations.
