About The Position

Catholic Charities of Baltimore is seeking a Program Assistant for the Weinberg Housing & Resource Center (WHRC), a low-barrier emergency shelter serving more than 275 adult men and women each night in Baltimore City. WHRC provides shelter, meals, showers, laundry, case management, convalescent care, and other supportive services to help individuals move toward stability, self-sufficiency, and permanent housing. This is a direct-service role supporting adults experiencing homelessness in a busy, on-site emergency shelter—not an administrative or desk-based position. The Program Assistant helps maintain a safe, respectful, and supportive environment by responding to resident needs, monitoring activity throughout the facility, documenting incidents and services, de-escalating difficult situations, and assisting with day-to-day resident needs. The work can be fast-paced and unpredictable, and may involve residents experiencing stress, conflict, behavioral health challenges, trauma, or crisis. The role calls for patience, dependability, compassion, sound judgment, calmness, and professional boundaries. The regular schedule is 7 PM to 7 AM on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays. The position is on-site at WHRC in Baltimore, Maryland. The pay rate is $17.50 per hour. CPR and/or First Aid and ServSafe certifications must be obtained within six months of employment and maintained thereafter. The role involves walking and standing for much of the shift, moving throughout the facility, providing hands-on assistance, and working in a team environment where attendance, punctuality, and reliability are essential. Physical duties may include moving objects up to 50 pounds, navigating stairs and other structures, working in confined spaces, and exposure to outdoor weather conditions. Catholic Charities describes its values as dignity, compassion, humility, collaboration, excellence, and integrity, and strives to foster a trauma-informed workplace culture promoting safety, empowerment, healing, and self-care.
