About The Position

The University of Pikeville (UPIKE) is seeking applicants for a full-time, nine-month, non-tenure track faculty position in biology, starting in August 2027. The position will focus on providing dynamic teaching and support for the University’s biology program, as well as a commitment to the University’s mission as a school of opportunity. This faculty’s primary responsibility will be to teach biology courses at all levels, with a focus on microbiology. Applicants must demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching in a small university setting and possess the ability to work effectively with others in a collegial environment dedicated to student learning. Rank and salary will be based on qualifications. An ideal applicant will be a generalist with the ability to teach a diverse array of courses and display a passion for teaching excellence. The position’s teaching responsibilities will include general biology courses for majors and non-majors, as well as microbiology courses to support our health sciences programs. The position also requires advising students, providing service to the University community, assisting with departmental activities, and continuing scholarly growth and development.

Requirements

  • A terminal graduate degree in biology or related field is required.
  • Applicants with ABD status and those within one year of completing their degree will also be considered.

  • Experience in teaching biology at the undergraduate level is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Create and maintain an environment that is conducive to innovative teaching and active learning.
  • Emphasize broadly trained skills and a strong passion for excellence in teaching, service, and scholarship.
  • Develop, communicate, and fulfill effective course learning outcomes.
  • Teach courses utilizing no-cost course materials and Open Educational Resources (OERs).
  • Compose and publish syllabi containing the items listed in the approved syllabus rubric.
  • Teaching course for both majors and non-majors.
  • Advising students, providing service to the University community, assisting with divisional activities, and continuing scholarly growth and development.
  • Ability to instruct classes using face-to-face, hybrid, and fully online modalities.
  • Establish mutual respect with students through effective and timely communication including expectations, deadlines, and feedback on work completed.
  • Maintain good working relationships with faculty and administration in all academic and non-academic sectors.
  • Communicate effectively with constituents within the University, surrounding community, and State regarding the University.
  • Utilize the Learning Management System (LMS) to support classroom instruction.
