About The Position

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Alberta is seeking to hire a faculty member at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor. This position focuses on Engineering Education, Communication, and AI-Enabled Learning and is a strategic investment in the future of engineering education. The successful candidate will be instrumental in shaping how engineers learn, communicate, and practice in the context of artificial intelligence, digital collaboration, and evolving societal challenges. This role involves contributing to teaching and scholarship at the intersection of engineering pedagogy and communication, and influencing institutional strategies for engineering education innovation, curriculum development, and AI-integrated learning environments. The position allows for the development of a research program in areas such as engineering rhetoric, technical communication, learning and pedagogy in the age of LLMs and generative AI, AI-enabled tools in engineering practice and education, curriculum design and assessment, or the intersection of engineering communication with policy, regulation, sustainability, climate change, and societal impact. The university is looking for a collaborative scholar and educator who will advance how engineers learn, communicate, and engage with emerging technologies.

Requirements

  • A Ph.D. or professional degree in a relevant field.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach and conduct scholarship at the intersection of engineering pedagogy and communication.
  • Experience or potential to develop a research program in areas related to AI-enabled learning, engineering communication, or curriculum design.
  • Ability to foster a collaborative environment.
  • Commitment to promoting a safe and inclusive workplace.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with large language models (LLMs) and generative AI in an educational or professional context.
  • Expertise in engineering rhetoric and technical communication.
  • Experience in curriculum design and assessment in engineering.
  • Knowledge of the intersection of engineering communication with policy, regulation, sustainability, climate change, and societal impact.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to teaching and scholarship at the intersection of engineering pedagogy and communication.
  • Shape institutional approaches to engineering education innovation, curriculum evolution, and AI-integrated learning environments.
  • Develop a research program in areas such as engineering rhetoric and technical communication; learning and pedagogy in the era of large language models (LLMs) and generative AI; AI-enabled tools in engineering practice and education; curriculum design and assessment in engineering; or the intersection of engineering communication with policy, regulation, sustainability, climate change, and societal impact.
  • Foster a workplace that prioritizes safety in all its forms - physical, cultural, and psychological.
  • Promote a safe environment, adhere to all safety laws, policies and procedures, complete all required safety training, identify hazards and implement controls, report incidents, and contribute to a culture of belonging and respect.
