About The Position

The Production Manager is responsible for meeting operational and financial goals in alignment with company goals and strategies for the Winston Salem Packaging Division. The role staffs equipment and ensures personnel are safety- and quality-conscious. The manager leads and directs a 24/7 manufacturing cell to maximize financial results, machine utilization, and output while minimizing costs and scrap, producing quality products, and maintaining a safe work environment. The role also leads supervisors and team leads, develops employee capability, supports continuous improvement, and manages production performance, spending, and employee relations.

Requirements

A bachelor's degree in business, a technical field, or a related field and at least 5 years of supervisory or management experience; or an associate degree in one of these fields and at least 5 years of supervisory or management experience; or no degree with 10 years of manufacturing work experience and at least 5 years of supervisory or management experience.
Thorough knowledge of manufacturing production processes and process and quality requirements.
Knowledge of packaging structures and materials.
Thorough knowledge of planning and scheduling functions.
Ability to manage multiple tasks with varying deadlines and handle highly confidential information and situations while maintaining confidentiality.
Working knowledge of PC operations and software, including an ERP system, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Lotus Notes.
Excellent oral and written communication skills across all levels of management.
Ability to direct manufacturing supervisors and staff, provide department-wide leadership, evaluate production performance, and develop strategic plans.
Ability to evaluate production constraints, develop action plans, and direct project implementation.
Ability to work extended hours and support all shifts as required.
Ability to travel overnight by appropriate modes of transportation, including air, train, and automobile.
Ability to communicate continuously with others face-to-face, by telephone, and through written methods.

Responsibilities

Monitor production outputs, machine utilization, downtime issues, quality, and service levels.
Monitor scrap levels and implement strategies to reduce scrap.
Ensure materials and products meet customer requirements and acceptability expectations.
Adhere to quality and safety program requirements and ensure reports meet program expectations.
Evaluate staffing needs and implement plans to ensure personnel are adequately trained and machine results are visible in production areas.
Develop training programs to ensure associates are trained for their assigned functions.
Ensure required safety training for plant personnel is accurate and completed on schedule.
Lead safety and housekeeping efforts to reduce the OSHA recordable incident rate.
Direct supervisors and team leads in continuous improvement projects and compliance with the management operating system for assigned responsibilities.
Develop supervisors and strengthen manufacturing-floor leadership.
Communicate regularly with manufacturing associates to develop and maintain effective employee relations.
Recommend, justify, and assist with implementation of capital project proposals that support the strategic plan.
Monitor employee performance, including action plans for underperformers and recognition for superior performance.
Conduct employee meetings as required.
Monitor departmental spending.
Participate on teams to strengthen overall company performance.
Follow all company safety rules and regulations.
Attend training programs to develop relevant knowledge, techniques, and skills.
Proactively assist internal contacts as part of a team effort.
Control costs by managing expenses proactively and eliminating waste.
Perform plant-related duties assigned by the manager.
