About The Position

The Production Manager leads a team maintaining, repairing, and servicing the locomotives that run through the Diesel House for the MBTA Commuter Rail.

Requirements

  • Detailed knowledge of rolling stock maintenance facilities, process and practices and modern maintenance techniques.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver projects in line with quality, cost and timescale.
  • Demonstrated acumen with regulatory requirements affecting passenger railroad operations including FRA and OSHA regulations.
  • Demonstrated capability to run a full operation and deliver agreed results.
  • Ability to use Office 365 suite of apps, Enterprise Asset Management systems, payroll systems.
  • Experience of successfully implementing change in a heavily unionized environment.
  • Communication skills at interpersonal and group levels.
  • Build trust in relationships.
  • Demonstrated capability to influence, negotiate and facilitate buy-in with a variety of stakeholders including labor organizations.
  • Proven ability to lead by example to foster positive cross functional relationships with other departments, MBTA, and suppliers.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure designated shift(s) are properly resourced to deliver the required work in line with the agreed Service Level Agreement.
  • Manage and oversee priorities for the shift based on the daily, weekly, and monthly plan to meet safety, production, quality, and cost control objectives.
  • Provide guidance for team members on technical and operational issues.
  • Provide managerial leadership to the Mechanical Department employees, including individual coaching, development, holding direct reports to account and managerial support.
  • Drive improvement of safety performance in sync with annual safety plan for the Mechanical Department.
  • Plan for and direct operations during service disruptions and periods of extreme weather to ensure safe working environment.
  • Ensure facility compliance with applicable regulations related to safety, sanitation, oil and fuel management, and hazardous waste disposal.
  • Carry out Testing and Observations in accordance with CFR.
  • Carry out Safety inspections of equipment and facilities as requested.
  • Develop and implement continuous improvement strategies to optimize performance, customer service and financial results in accordance with overall strategy.
  • Ensure Standard Workday methodology is properly applied.
  • Identify areas of improvement and implement changes.
  • Responsible for Shift handover.
  • Communicating regularly with upper management regarding problems or issues impacting production.
  • Collaborate with Foreman to ensure job briefings are properly planned, accurate communication to all employees regarding scope of work.
  • Collaborate with Foreman throughout the shift to obtain updates on progression of work and make necessary recommendations as needed.
  • Attend daily shift briefings and communicate safety, company, and performance information and metrics.
  • Communicate with Transportation to organize shop and yard moves; request equipment.
  • Work with other departments as required.
  • Ensure that all Inspection, Servicing, Cleaning, and Maintenance is carried out in accordance with the regulatory and contractual requirements.
  • Ensure all equipment repairs are carried out in the required timescales.
  • Any deferred repairs will be noted in the Maintenance Management System.
  • Adhere to daily and weekly budgets for labor and materials.
  • Undertake condition of equipment audits.
  • Understanding of the wider public transport sector.
  • Methods and tools for performance optimization.
  • Stakeholder relationship management at a senior management level.
  • Defining and managing KPI’s.
  • Attend layovers as directed during winter weather to support service start up.
  • Carry out other duties as directed.
