Product Manager, Urology Bio-AI Nexus

University of California, San Francisco•San Francisco, CA

About The Position

The Product Manager, Urology Bio-AI Nexus, reports to the Vice Chair for Translational and Population Science Research and Associate Chair for Data and Analytics in the UCSF Department of Urology. The role drives product integration, development coordination, and stakeholder alignment across the Nexus platform, a unified multimodal research and clinical data ecosystem supporting precision urology at UCSF. It operates at the interface of data engineering, clinical and translational research, and end users, translating requirements from clinical and laboratory science faculty, clinical research leadership, and other staff into actionable specifications. The role coordinates development priorities and timelines and contributes to completing and documenting software tools and data products. The Product Manager maintains a living product roadmap, proactively identifies gaps between platform capabilities and program needs, and ensures that Nexus tools meet usability, reliability, and documentation standards for clinical research staff, investigators, and institutional partners. The position calls for technical fluency to extend existing codebases using AI-assisted development tools, but does not require full-stack software architecture expertise. The role has a high degree of autonomy and serves as an integrating force across the Nexus team and its stakeholders. The UCSF Department of Urology and UCSF Prostate Program curate a large integrated data ecosystem spanning electronic health records, natural-language-processed clinical reports, digital pathology, radiology imaging, biospecimens, and multi-omic data across more than 120 TB of on-premise research storage. Bio-AI Nexus connects these resources through coordinated, queryable, and scalable infrastructure for translational discovery, precision medicine, and AI model development.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of product management, technical program management, or equivalent experience in a data-intensive technology environment.
  • Demonstrated experience collecting user requirements, managing product backlogs, and driving software products from development to deployment.
  • Technical fluency to read, extend, and troubleshoot existing Python and SQL codebases using AI-assisted development tools, and to contribute incremental enhancements without full-stack development expertise.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills, including maintaining roadmaps and holding cross-functional teams to timelines and deliverables without formal supervisory authority.
  • Advanced oral and written communication skills and demonstrated ability to bridge technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field and/or equivalent experience or training.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced degree (MS, MPH, PhD, or MBA) in computer science, biomedical informatics, data science, public health, or a related field.
  • Experience working in a research, clinical, or healthcare data environment.
  • Familiarity with electronic health record data structures, especially Epic/Clarity, and clinical data standards such as HL7, FHIR, and OMOP.
  • Experience with data visualization, user interface prototyping, or exploratory data tools.
  • Familiarity with DICOM imaging data, digital pathology workflows, or AI/ML model deployment.

Responsibilities

  • Develop project plans, including goals, deliverables, resources, budgets, and timelines, for product, service, and enhancement launches.
  • Maintain a living product roadmap across Nexus workstreams; facilitate priority-setting with faculty and staff; track milestones and deliverables; surface and resolve blockers; and ensure development is scoped and sequenced in alignment with program goals and available resources.
  • Lead technical discussions with advisory groups and customers, and identify opportunities for additional value-added products and services based on their feedback.
  • Work with clinical research coordinators, faculty, statisticians, and research operations staff to collect, clarify, and prioritize requirements; translate user needs into technical specifications; and conduct structured user testing and beta validation.
  • Act as a product and service liaison across UCSF units, external agencies, and customers to support effective production, delivery, and operation of products and enhancements.
  • Extend and refine existing software tools and data products using AI-assisted development practices; contribute code, configuration, documentation, and testing to bring tools to production readiness.
  • Coordinate with the data architect on handoffs and continuity, and liaise with other UCSF units and departments involved in similar initiatives to share lessons and coordinate efforts.
  • Define and track key performance indicators for Nexus products and infrastructure, and provide program leadership with periodic progress reports against deliverables.
  • Develop and maintain end-user documentation, data dictionaries, release notes, and operational guides, ensuring institutional knowledge is captured and accessible.
